| WellPoint stock stumbles on customer losses Investors whacked WellPoint Inc. stock this morning after the Indianapolis-based health insurer tamped down expectations for customer growth, the shares dropping more than 3 percent, to $78.90. WellPoint said in its second-quarter earnings report that it lost 108,000 customers in the three months ended June 30 and now expects to add 400,000 fewer customers than it predicted in April.
Mind Trust hires controversial superintendent H. Douglas Williams, the Perry Township School superintendent who accepted a buyout early this month in a high-profile clash with the board, has joined The Mind Trust, a downtown not-for-profit that supports entrepreneurs in the field of education. Williams, who started July 23, will develop alternatives to traditional high schools in an effort to curb dropouts. Mind Trust was started last year by David Harris, the former charter schools director. Its largest funding source is the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation.

| | Lilly osteoporosis drug recommended for breast cancer A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel has recommended approving Eli Lilly and Co.'s Evista osteoporosis drug for post-menopausal women with osteoporosis and post-menopausal women at high risk for breast cancer. The non-binding recommendation follows an announcement from Lilly earlier this month that Evista reduced the risk of certain invasive breast cancers in post-menopausal women.
OneAmerica buys $700 million in business from Transamerica OneAmerica Financial Partners, the Indianapolis-based insurance and financial services company, said today it has acquired a block of fixed annuity business from Transamerica Life Insurance Co. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The price was not disclosed, but the addition will boost OneAmerica's asset base by $700 million, pushing the total above $19 billion. The new business includes 40,000 plan participants.
Illinois politicians press Daniels to yank BP permit Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich said yesterday that state officials would consider legal action if Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels doesn't rescind a permit clearing the way for an Indiana oil refinery expansion that would increase pollution in Lake Michigan. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management approved BP Amoco's request last month to release into Lake Michigan more ammonia and silt from its refinery in Whiting. The amount still is within federal guidelines.
Intec to close Morocco plant, lay off 165 workers An auto parts plant in Morocco in northwest Indiana is being closed by its Palatine, Ill., parent, Intec Group Inc. The work will be spread among Intec plants in Palatine, Mexico and China in order to cut costs, according to the Journal & Courier of Lafayette. Daniels orders more reassessments Gov. Mitch Daniels has ordered property tax reassessments in three more Indiana counties: Delaware, Gibson and Posey. Daniels announced last week that Marion County would be reassessed. The reassessment could lower tax bills for many homeowners who might have been charged too much because business property was undervalued.

| State senator dismisses call for special session Republican state senators believe it's too early to call a special session to address property taxes. Gov. Mitch Daniels has said he would consider calling a special session, but Sen. Pro Tem David Long says convening the Legislature for a week or two in November would cost taxpayers no more money and give the Commission on Tax Finance Policy time to agree on long-term property tax reform.
Police look for second burglary suspect One person is in custody following a nine-mile police chase this morning that started at a convenience store burglary near 9100 W. 10th St. The two suspects dumped their sport-utility vehicle and took off on foot. Officers caught the first suspect, a juvenile, after he ran inside the police perimeter. His accomplice is at large. Fox 59 will have more tonight at 10 p.m.
Overnight fire sends woman to hospital An overnight house fire sent neighbors running for their lives when they thought they heard fireworks and explosions. The fire that started at a home in the 1300 block of Kappes Street, near South Belmont Avenue and West Morris Street, spread to another house. A woman in one house who ran back inside to save her cat is recovering after being sent to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
State trooper injured on I-465 Indiana State Police trooper Hank Kalina was injured this morning after stopping a vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 465 east of Allisonville Road. A box truck driven by Andrew Yoder, of Geneva, struck the vehicle and Kalina was knocked into a ditch. He was taken by helicopter to Methodist Hospital with minor injuries, and passengers in the vehicle involved in the stop were treated at the scene. An investigation will determine whether charges will be filed. | | | | |
