Some Indiana stocks rebound after sell-off
On the day after investors retreated from Wall Street, equity markets staged a partial recovery this morning, with some Indiana companies faring well and others seeing a downturn. Conseco Inc., Accuride Corp. and 1st Source all saw gains. But Irwin Financial Corp. and Finish Line Inc. retreated.   Full Story
 
Candidates, Bush urge reviving financial bailout
President Bush warned today that failing to pass a financial rescue plan would bring severe consequences to the U.S. economy. "Congress must act," he declared in an appeal that both presidential candidates echoed. Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama separately urged Congress to redouble efforts to get a deal through and both proposed increasing federal deposit insurance on accounts to $250,000 as a key part of it. In brief remarks at the White House, Bush warned that, "if our nation continues on this course, the economic damage will be painful and lasting."   Full Story

Union overwhelmingly ratifies Kroger contract
More than 98 percent of United Food and Commercial Workers Union members at Indianapolis-area Kroger stores have voted to ratify a new, four-year contract. Local 700 President Joe Chorpenning said the contract includes wage increases totaling $3 to $4 an hour over the life of the contract. Most workers getting the increases now make $10.25 to $11.85 an hour. The union gave no concessions to Kroger, Chorpenning said: "We did great."   Full Story

Duke project lands 6,400 defense workers
Real estate firm Duke Realty Corp. said today that the Army has picked Duke's Mark Center in Alexandria, Va., as the site for 6,400 soon-to-be-relocated Department of Defense employees. The workers are moving from Arlington, Va., as part of the Base Realignment and Closure Act.   Full Story

Tax breaks approved for Delphi upgrades
The Kokomo City Council has approved $160 million in tax breaks for Delphi Corp., hoping that factory upgrades the tax breaks support will keep 3,000 jobs in the city. The council voted unanimously yesterday to approve the 10 years of tax abatements for Troy, Mich.-based Delphi. Delphi has been operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since October 2005.   Full Story

Norton to lead Boone County development
Dax Norton, the economic development director for Blackford County, has been named executive director of Boone County Economic Development Corp. Norton, 36, replaces Kristi McKillip, who joined Indy Partnership in July. Norton also has held business development jobs in Greensburg and Bloomington, according to the Lebanon Reporter.

Patriot Homes files for Chapter 11 protection
Patriot Homes Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, blaming the slumping housing market and tight credit. The company, based in Middlebury, filed for protection from creditors Sunday. Patriot says it plans to continue operations as usual at its plants in Indiana, Texas and Alabama.   Full Story

Purdue dedicating building named for Jischke
Purdue University is honoring its former president today at the official dedication of the Martin C. Jischke Hall of Biomedical Engineering. Jischke retired last year after leading Purdue for seven years. The $25 million facility named for Jischke opened in fall of 2006 on the West Lafayette campus, allowing the Department of Biomedical Engineering to transform into a full-fledged school.   Full Story

Crawford's Bakery closes downtown spot
Owners of Crawford's Bakery are shuttering their downtown location. For 21 years, the bakery, 1609 N. Capitol Ave., has served up homemade baked goods and deli sandwiches. The closing will be marked with a ceremony and food giveaways to in-store customers. At 6 p.m., IFD Station 5 will wheel any remaining products to the station at 155 W. 16th St. Owners say they decided to close after the lease on their building expired. All employees were offered jobs at the company's northwest-side location. Fox 59 will have more at 10 p.m.

Ballard signs 2009 budget
Mayor Greg Ballard signed the city's 2009 budget today. Arts spending will be curtailed, and cuts also are on tap for parks and the jail. Ballard says the budget will help Indianapolis live within its means while adding money for infrastructure improvements.

Police collide responding to robbery
Two police officers were injured late last night when their cars crashed during a pursuit of a robbery suspect. The officers collided at 52nd Street and North Keystone Avenue after responding to a robbery at a Subway restaurant in the 5500 block of Keystone. One officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to Methodist Hospital. The suspects, two men, were apprehended after a brief chase on foot.

Convicted sex offender died of strangulation
An autopsy shows that a registered sex offender died of strangulation after a struggle Sunday at a residence in the 3500 block of West 79th Street. Police believe David Meyers, 52, broke into the room of a teenage girl naked and armed with a knife. The girl's father, Robert McNally, 64, put Meyers in a headlock after responding to his daughter's scream. Prosecutors say they do not plan to file charges against McNally.

Emmis Communications Corp. is taking a beating along with other radio companies on Wall Street.
