Lugar nephew to lead Fundex Games
Todd Lugar, a nephew of U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, has been named president of Fundex Games Ltd., a Plainfield company that produces toys and games. Lugar, 47, most recently was a director at Indianapolis investment bank Periculum Capital Co. LLC. Fundex CEO Carl "Chip" Voigt said he split off his duties as president, leaving Lugar to oversee administration and work on strategic planning and acquisitions.   Full Story

Zyprexa class action given green light
Enough evidence of fraud by Eli Lilly and Co. in its marketing of Zyprexa exists to go ahead with a jury trial, a judge in New York has ruled. Plaintiffs in the case claim Lilly urged physicians to prescribe the schizophrenia and bipolar disorder drug for uses not approved by the federal government. Insurance companies, labor unions and pension funds can proceed with a class-action suit against the Indianapolis pharmaceutical maker, Judge Jack Weinstein said today in a 295-page opinion, according to Bloomberg.   Full Story


Panic-bar maker plans 40-person expansion
Locally based Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies plans to expand its east side manufacturing operations, creating 40 jobs, the Indiana Economic Development Corp. announced this morning. The 100-year-old company makes panic release bars and electronic security products for exits. It will invest $6.1 million to upgrade equipment at its Tobey Drive plant, which already employs 530. The state offered Ingersoll Rand as much as $200,000 in performance-based tax credits and up to $90,000 in training grants. Indianapolis also is considering a property tax abatement for the company.

Ball State launches $200M fund-raising campaign
Ball State University is embarking on its largest capital campaign in the Muncie school's history, seeking to raise $200 million. Officials announced the goal this morning and hope to raise the money by 2011. Roughly $122 million already has been raised. Much of the money will be used to fund 200 new scholarships and more endowed chairs and professorships. Money also will be used to expand its Museum of Art and to support the Ball State Fund.

Zimmer Holdings to acquire Abbott Spine
Orthopedic implant maker Zimmer Holdings Inc. said it is buying a medical device subsidiary of Abbott Laboratories for about $360 million in cash. Warsaw-based Zimmer said it expects to fund the purchase of Abbott Spine with cash on hand and by tapping existing credit lines. Abbott Spine had 2007 revenue of $109 million.   Full Story

Summit explores carbon capture, storage ideas
With federal greenhouse gas limits possible in the near future, Indiana's utilities could soon face the challenge of reducing carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants that generate most of the state's electricity. A state-sponsored two-day summit exploring that issue and fledgling technologies that could eliminate carbon dioxide emissions by burying the liquefied gas far below ground drew about 150 people this week to the IUPUI campus. "We've got to know how, because I think this will be the decision our society makes," Gov. Mitch Daniels told the group.   Full Story

Beta Steel to be acquired by Russian steel giant
Novolipetsk Steel, one of Russia's largest steel companies, said yesterday that it has signed a definitive agreement to buy Beta Steel Corp., a Portage-based minimill producer of hot rolled coil, for $400 million. Novolipetsk said it would pair Beta with its August acquisition of John Maneely Co., a Collingswood, N.J., pipe maker that operates a tube manufacturing operation near Beta's headquarters. Fueled by record profits, Russian steelmakers have snapped up 10 percent of steelmaking capacity in the U.S. in the past few years.   Full Story

Kiss member Gene Simmons sued over IRL deal
A Los Angeles man claims in a lawsuit that Gene Simmons took him for a ride on a marketing deal with the Indy Racing League. Allan Brown on Wednesday sued Simmons and two business partners, claiming the group cut him out of a 2006 deal between the Kiss bassist and the racing league. Brown is seeking unspecified damages and is claiming fraud and slander.   Full Story

No more Big Ten Bargain at Bloomington pizzeria
A pizza chain is no longer calling its large pizza, breadsticks and soda special the Big Ten Bargain after lawyers from the Big Ten Conference complained. Bloomington-based Pizza Express is changing the name of the combo to the Big Bargain. Company founder Jeff Mease says Pizza Express has used the Big Ten Bargain name since 1988, but didn't try to register it until recently.   Full Story

Colts, Ringling Brothers team up for Blue Friday
Blue Friday is back as Indianapolis Colts fans gear up for Sunday's regular season opener at Lucas Oil Stadium. In celebration of its 25th season in Indianapolis, the Colts teamed up with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for a parade on Monument Circle at noon today. Sunday's game starts at 8:15 p.m. Fox 59 will have more tonight at 10.

Murderer Joshua Bean to be sentenced today
Convicted murderer Joshua Bean, 24, will learn his fate at a sentencing hearing today. It took a jury just four hours to convict the Indianapolis man last month in the April 2007 slaying of his girlfriend, Heather Norris. Police testified that he confessed to the killing and admitted disposing of her body in several trash bins across the south side of Indianapolis. Bean faces 45 to 68 years in prison.

IU tests emergency alert system
Students, faculty and staff at Indiana University participated in a test of the Bloomington campus' emergency notification system at noon today. The test marked the first full-scale use of the system. Officials were expected to send about 100,000 e-mails and make 66,000 automated phone calls. The test was conducted in conjunction with a monthly test of IU's outdoor warning system.

Penrod, Oktoberfest on tap this weekend
Indianapolis residents have plenty to look forward to this weekend. The Penrod Arts Fair begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Meanwhile, Oktoberfest continues today and tomorrow at the Indiana State Fairgrounds with traditional German food, German beers, music, dancing and carnival rides. Greek cuisine, live music, dancing and a marketplace will be featured at the Greek Festival. The annual event runs from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. today and from noon to 11 p.m. tomorrow at Holy Trinity Greek Church, 4011 N. Pennsylvania St.
