| United Way shoots for record $40M United Way of Central Indiana leaders announced this morning that they will attempt to raise a record $40 million in this year's campaign. The target is nearly $1 million more than contributors gave in 2007 to help the 100-plus agencies in United Way's six-county region. Early indicators show the campaign is off to a solid start. Corporate giving already has contributed $11 million, or 28 percent, of the goal.
RCA Dome to be deflated Sept. 24 Within just 45 minutes later this month, the RCA Dome will disappear from Indianapolis' skyline, the Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority said today. The deflation, scheduled for Sept. 24, will be accomplished by turning off the fans that have kept the roof inflated since the dome was built in 1984. The Indianapolis Colts' home, which was replaced last month by Lucas Oil Stadium, is being razed to make room for an expansion of the Indiana Convention Center.

Lawmaker will become lobbyist once term ends Republican state Rep. Mike Ripley of Monroe is the latest legislator turned lobbyist. Ripley will become a lobbyist for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce on Nov. 5, a day after the general election. Ripley has represented Adams, Allen and Wells counties in northeastern Indiana since 1996, but decided earlier this year not to run for re-election. Nearly 30 other states mandate waiting periods before lawmakers can become lobbyists, but similar proposals have never passed the Indiana General Assembly.
Bayh joins group seeking oil drilling compromise Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh said yesterday that he was joining a bipartisan group of senators working on a proposal to allow a limited increase in offshore oil drilling in hopes of breaking a stalemate in Congress over the issue. Bayh said he was among perhaps six senators being added to the eight Democrats and eight Republicans involved in the effort. The group supports a bill that would lift a ban on oil and natural gas drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and off the southeastern U.S. coast.
Purdue, IU among schools with rising enrollments Purdue and Indiana universities both have record enrollments topping 40,000 students on their main campuses, and other schools - both state-supported and private - also are reporting enrollment gains that are possibly driven by the state's struggling economy. John Story, interim dean of Purdue's graduate school, said his university's $333 million in sponsored research funding and the sagging economy might account for the increase. "Graduate enrollment often mimics the economy," Story said.
