Efforts to streamline local government, largely tabled this year as lawmakers grappled with the state's property tax crisis, could gain momentum under a new coalition that has pledged to promote changes in a system described as cumbersome and redundant. The group, which includes the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the Indiana Association of Realtors and the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, expects to spend $300,000 to $500,000 on its effort to get more of a state panel's recommendations passed in the next legislative session.   Full Story

RV makers unlikely to see Katrina boom repeat
After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, at least one industry got a lift: recreational vehicle makers, which benefited from the more than $1 billion spent on travel trailers and mobile homes to house displaced residents. But after Hurricane Gustav, RV makers have little reason to expect a similar boost, said analysts, the companies and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The key difference: Gustav is proving much milder than Katrina.   Full Story

Carmel firm might be fined by nuclear agency
Alt & Witzig Engineering Inc. stands to be fined $3,250 by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission because a routine inspection of its Lafayette facility and a temporary job site found that the company didn't adequately protect portable nuclear gauges, according to The Journal & Courier of Lafayette. The gauges, which measure soil density and moisture content for construction projects, in one instance were locked away in a box on an open truck bed and in another instance were in a room behind only one locked door. Two protection systems are required to prevent possible exposure to radiation in the event the equipment is stolen.

Lilly continues to build case for prasugrel

Eli Lilly and Co. continued to press its case for regulatory approval of its blood thinner prasugrel today by releasing two more studies offering new analysis of prasugrel's clinical trial data. The release comes weeks before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is scheduled to rule on whether the drug should be allowed onto the market. One of the studies shows that prasugrel reduced the risk of recurrent heart attacks in cardiac patients by 23 percent or more compared with Plavix, the reigning blood thinner now on the market.   Full Story
