Logistics firm moving headquarters to Carmel
USA InterCargo LLC, a transportation and logistics company, has moved its headquarters from Savannah, Ga., to 564 Industrial Drive in Carmel. The company will consolidate operations in Savannah as well as in Los Angeles and New York, and owner Minda Balcius plans to double the local staff of seven.   Full Story

Marketing Informatics sells print operation
Marketing Informatics LLC, an Indianapolis direct-marketing firm, has sold its printing unit to Indianapolis-based Printing Partners Inc. Marketing Informatics acquired the print operation, then called RPS Printing Inc., from Tom Bius three years ago. However, the print arm needed a big investment to bring capacity in line with Marketing Informatics' needs, said founder and CEO Bob Massie.   Full Story


Kokomo hospital lays off 46 workers
Howard Regional Health System of Kokomo says it has eliminated 46 employees, citing a decline in demand from patients. It was the latest in a string of cutbacks for the Kokomo-based hospital that until now has relied on attrition to scale back expenses. CEO James P. Alender said in a statement that the drop in patients had been expected, but that the decline - especially in elective procedures - has been faster than the employee attrition rate.   Full Story

Emmis targets minority listeners
Indianapolis-based radio and magazine company Emmis Communications Corp. has formed a partnership to broadcast ethnic programming to Indian, Pakistani and other South Asian communities in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. The partner, New York-based WorldBand Media LLC, will send its programming over Emmis' high-definition radio bandwidth, Emmis said today. The signals are expected to be available next month.

Warner Bodies expands in Noblesville
Noblesville-based truck body maker Warner Bodies Inc. has added 30,000 square feet of production space following its January acquisition of Metro Products in Indianapolis. The $850,000 deal included the food processing, chemical and pharmaceutical equipment Metro made through its Langsenkamp division. Warner is adding 15 employees to its existing roster of 80.

Higher ed panel wants 10,000 more grads
College slackers, beware: Indiana's higher education planners want you to earn your degrees in four years or less or it might cost your schools some of their state support. A new strategic plan for state-supported colleges and universities presented yesterday by the Commission on Higher Education calls on them to turn out 10,000 more students with degrees each year - about a 33-percent increase - if Indiana is to catch up and keep pace with the leading states economically.   Full Story

Hurricanes prompt firm to produce more food
AmeriQual Group LLC, an Evansville company that makes ready-to-eat meals for the military and vending machines, plans to hire 400 temporary workers due to rising demand from hurricane-stricken areas. The positions are available in general production, warehousing and packaging, according to the Evansville Courier & Press.

MotoGP kick-off today
Hundreds of motorcycles rounded Monument Circle this morning for the Indy Kick Start Celebration in honor of the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP. Professional motorcycle racers joined Mayor Greg Ballard and other city officials for the event. Exhibits, music and food are available until 1 p.m. The Red Bull Indianapolis GP race starts Sunday at 3 p.m.

Standoff ends peacefully
A SWAT standoff on the east side was resolved peacefully last night. Indianapolis police were called to the 800 block of North Keystone Avenue after reports of a home invasion. Officers say two men entered a residence, but one of the people inside ran out the back door and called for help. Detectives are looking into reports that the alleged robbers were looking for cash.

Body found in trash can
Investigators are trying to identify a body found stuffed in a trash can yesterday afternoon at 3921 E. 11th St. A neighbor called police after noticing an open back gate that should have been closed. Detectives are scouring the area, talking to residents.

Teen critical after hit-and-run
Indianapolis police suspect a drunk driver was behind a hit-and-run accident late last night along South Meridian Street that left a girl in critical condition with head injuries. The female driver fled, but a witness called police with a description of the car. An officer spotted the car minutes later and took the driver in for alcohol tests.
