Penrod Art Fair
Sept. 6
Indianapolis Museum of Art

Yes, there are lots of visual artists and crafters at this annual you-gotta-go festival. But there are also performers on four stages, including, this year, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre, Kenyetta Dance, the Russian Academy, the Gordon Bonham Blues Band, the Indianapolis Children's Choir, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra and student winners of the Prelude Awards. So factor in some downtime to sit, watch and enjoy. For details, click here.

"Together Again: Music and Poetry."
Sept. 4
American Cabaret Theatre

The reality is there are only so many people who will go to poetry readings. But combine poetry with music and, well, you may be on to something. That's the hope as the American Cabaret Theatre launches a new series that combines live poetry with live music. At this entry, titled "A Call for Peace," Indiana Poet Laureate Norbert Krapf is joined by jazz pianist/composer Monika Herzig and country performers Tom Roznowski and the Living Daylights. For details on this event-and others in the series-click here.

"Scheherazade"
Sept. 5-6
Clowes Memorial Hall

Creating dance at the level that Dance Kaleidoscope does is always a challenge. It's even more difficult when, as happened last month, a dancer breaks her foot. Still, the show will go on for DK's season opening, in which the company collaborates with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on a performance set to the music of Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff. For details, click here.

"Gifts of the Gamboliers"
Sept. 6-June 8
Indianapolis Museum of Art

Back in the 1920s, $25 a year would have bought you membership in the Gamboliers, a group of Indiana arts patrons whose collective cash went to buy then-contemporary art. Among the works purchased were pieces by Picasso, Matisse and Modigliani. See what these visionaries added to the Indianapolis Museum of Art collection in this temporary exhibition. For details, click here.

"Hoosier Painters in Umbria, Italy, 2008"
Sept. 4
Columbia Club

Last Spring, a dozen Hoosier artists took a working trip to Umbria, Italy, and returned inspired. The product of their inspiration will be on display at this exhibition, and the usually closed-to-the-public Columbia Club will be open to everyone. An added bonus: author Carol Faenzi, author of "The Stonecutter's Aria," will be on hand to sign books. The dining room will also be open for pay-as-you-go meals featuring, what else, Italian specialties and Umbria wine. Details at 761-7524.

This week's contest
Want to see "Solid Gold Soul" at the American Cabaret Theatre? You can win a pair of tickets by entering here. We'll draw one name at random. The show, which runs from Sept. 19-Oct. 26, celebrates the uniquely American brand of music through songs including "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "What's Love Got to Do with It?" For more information on the show, click here.
Just to make things interesting, in the response box, tell us a variation on your favorite soul song. Tweak the title. Get creative. What you tell us won't help you win, but next week we'll offer a link to our favorite responses.
Last week, we offered tickets to see the Indiana Repertory Theatre's season-opening production of "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure." The winner: Heather Heath. We asked you to name your favorite mystery. Some interesting responses are here. Make sure to visit www.ibj.com/arts for previews, reviews, blogs and video. And check out the IBJ Arts & Entertainment Season Preview in the Sept. 1 IBJ, available now.
