 |  Crane tech park moves ahead with development An area long considered one of the most promising sites in the state for economic development is finally getting traction. A year ago, the budding WestGate @ Crane Technology Park barely had opened its first building. Now the park, which is next to the secretive Naval Surface Warfare Center at Crane in southwestern Indiana, anticipates having filled four buildings with 250 technicians, engineers and administrators by the end of the year. 
Siemens moving into Plainfield warehouse One of the world's largest health care suppliers plans to open a distribution center and warehouse in Plainfield. Pennsylvania-based Siemens Healthcare USA is taking a big chunk of a 500,000-square-foot building at 2150 Stanley Road, company spokesman Lance Longwell said.

 | |  Economy wallops several Indiana plants The sluggish economy has prompted several companies to close plants or lay off workers in the state in recent days. Affected operations include plants in Shelbyville and in northern and southern Indiana that manufacture furniture and auto parts. 
Passing local government plan could be tough Those who plan a big legislative push to streamline local government say they know what's coming their way: a lot of shoving back. "We certainly understand that, and that is why it has to be a very strong, grass-roots effort by citizens who really understand that Indiana has more layers of government than almost any other state our size," said Marilyn Schultz, who is leading a new coalition that will try to get more of a state panel's recommendations enacted. The group has some heavy hitters, but opponents of some of the proposals have plenty of punching power, too. 
Stocks surge on plan for mortgage giants Stocks surged today as investors rushed to lay bets on a broad economic recovery following the weekend announcement that the U.S. government will bail out mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The major indexes jumped, with the Dow Jones industrials gaining more than 250 points. 
Braun wins iPod in IBJ Daily survey Ben Braun, hiring and recruiting manager for American Structurepoint Inc., is the winner of a 32-gigabyte iPod Touch from IBJ. Braun's name was picked at random from a list of 2,802 people who registered to win the popular device while participating in a reader survey for IBJ Daily.  Children in apartment fire tossed to safety An overnight fire at Bradford Square Apartments, 6260 E. 11th St., caused people to throw five children out a third-floor window to escape smoke and flames. The children were caught uninjured by neighbors and passers-by. One man was treated for smoke inhalation. An investigation into the cause is ongoing. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.
Officer injured in line of duty honored Indianapolis police officer Jason Fishburn, who was shot in the head by a fleeing murder suspect July 10, yesterday made his first public appearance since the shooting. Fishburn met with supporters at Ride for Fish, a charity motorcycle ride organized in his honor. Fishburn can recall his family's names and can walk with some help. He also will be honored at Thursday night's Indiana Fever game.

 | Weekend prank lands man in jail Muncie police have arrested a 28-year-old Indianapolis man after he tried to play a prank on his girlfriend. Investigators say Jeremiah Blackwood snuck into Ashley Miller's Ball State University apartment dressed as a robber, complete with a mask and gloves. When he demanded she hand over money, Miller fled the apartment and flagged down a bystander who called for help. Blackwood surrendered after police surrounded the building. He admitted to the prank and was arrested on charges of criminal recklessness and intimidation.
Speedway apartments to be demolished Speedway authorities have ordered that the remnants of International Village Apartments be demolished and the debris hauled away. The building, at 6363 Hollister Drive, was gutted by fire June 30, displacing 20 families. Town officials have said management had made little effort to clean the property.
