WellPoint may lose $214M on Fannie, Freddie
WellPoint Inc. expects to lose $214 million of its $243 million in investments in troubled housing lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the Indianapolis-based health insurer disclosed yesterday. WellPoint said it would take a charge for the losses in the third quarter, but that the total figure is difficult to predict considering the volatility of the mortgage lenders. The company reaffirmed its profit expectation of $5.42 to $5.57 per share in 2008.

Man accused of stealing $120,000 from banks
A federal grand jury in Indianapolis has indicted Indianapolis resident James Moore, 27, accusing him of defrauding various banks out of $120,000. Moore obtained the money in cash payments after giving banks false information about the amount of money he had on deposit on various prepaid debit cards, U.S. Attorney Tim Morrison said in a statement.   Full Story

American Sentry assets scooped up for 'steal'
An Indianapolis startup company has acquired the intellectual assets of American Sentry Guard for what the new owner described as a fire-sale price. Armando Perez, who owns Integrated Security Solutions, said he bought the assets at auction late last month for less than $250,000 - half the price the assets would have brought had different buyers attended the auction. "We got a steal," Perez said.   Full Story

Clarian drops for-profit status in Lafayette
The $200 million hospital Indianapolis-based Clarian Health is building with a doctors group in Lafayette will open Oct.15 as a not-for-profit rather than a for-profit venture. The change in the joint venture, called Clarian Arnett Health, was driven by the desire to reinvest proceeds back into the partnership, according to The Journal & Courier of Lafayette. Those investments are expected to attract doctors, buy equipment and ultimately better serve the community.   Full Story

Proposal to broaden sales taxes stirs interest
Indiana could lower its sales tax - but apply it to more services - and generate enough revenue to eliminate property taxes for homeowners, an interim panel of lawmakers was told yesterday. Unlike other proposals presented to an interim legislative commission on tax policy for eliminating all property taxes, or at least those on homeowners, two plans that would expand sales taxes to get the latter job done got a warm reception from some top lawmakers.   Full Story

A hydrogen manufacturing company headquartered in Tinton Falls, N.J., says it plans to build a $227 million waste-to-energy plant in Wabash County instead of DeKalb County. ForeverGreen Enterprises Inc. had previously proposed a plant in an industrial park in Butler, north of Fort Wayne. The company now says it will team with International Power Group Ltd. of Celebration, Fla., to build a plant north of Marion at LaFontaine. International Power Group says the plant would convert hazardous waste into green hydrogen, methanol and electricity.

Democrat Jill Long Thompson wants the state Inspector General's office to investigate Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels' election-year use of state aircraft. State to receive $10 million to retrain RV workers
Indiana will receive a $10.4 million emergency grant to help retrain recreational vehicle industry workers who lost their jobs because of layoffs caused by the struggling economy and high gasoline prices, Gov. Mitch Daniels said yesterday. Eligible displaced workers can receive up to $6,000 to enter a program to earn an associate degree or industry-recognized certificate in a program connected to high-need occupations. According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, about 6,000 RV workers filed unemployment claims from July 19 to Aug. 16, but it was not clear how many of those were permanently dislocated and thus eligible for retraining.   Full Story

Residents irked about noise from ethanol plant
An ethanol plant that opened in April northeast of Indianapolis is creating a noise that nearby residents compare to the droning of a lawn mower that never shuts off. Roger Bennett, who lives 1-1/2 miles from the Poet LLC plant near Alexandria, said living near it is like having a neighbor who mows his lawn every second of every day. Despite the noise complaints, Poet plant manager Dave Hudak said the Sioux Falls, S.D.-based company is doing nothing wrong at the plant.   Full Story

CEO change opens door to hospital merger
Clarian Health's merger with Muncie-based Cardinal Health System - announced Monday - began on Aug. 16, 2007. That's the day Cardinal announced that Kelly Stanley would replace CEO Bob Curtis, who had resigned abruptly the day before. It's also the day Clarian CEO Dan Evans phoned Stanley to talk. The two met for lunch soon after, Evans said. Merger talks wouldn't get serious until the second quarter of this year. But Stanley's willingness to talk was enough to cause Evans to back off plans Clarian had to build its own medical center in the Muncie area.
