Lilly chief outlines plan to boost stock, image
Eli Lilly and Co. can restore its image and improve its stock price by doing a better job of touting benefits of the drugs it sells and turning research into new products faster. That's the strategy CEO John Lechleiter planned to lay out today during a lunchtime speech to the Economic Club of Indiana. IBJ received a copy of his prepared remarks in advance. The industry "can barely win a beauty contest against tobacco or Big Oil - and that's saying something!" Lechleiter said.   Full Story

Indiana Business College expands into Ohio
Indiana Business College is expanding outside the state for the first time in its 106-year history. The company plans to open a $2 million campus in Columbus, Ohio, in September 2009. Columbus was chosen because the demographics are similar to Indianapolis, and the market was under-served, he said. Traditionally having trained secretaries, the college has branched into health care, culinary arts and other areas.   Full Story

Lilly plans to disclose payments to doctors
In an industry first, Eli Lilly and Co. says it will begin disclosing how much money it paid to individual doctors for advice, speeches and other services. The Indianapolis-based drug company's move comes as members of Congress push a disclosure bill in an effort to prevent such payments from improperly influencing medical decisions. Beginning next year, Lilly will disclose payments of more than $500 to doctors for their roles as advisers and for speaking at educational seminars.   Full Story

The proposal next goes to the city council for consideration.   Full Story

Candidates spar over education in 2nd debate
Indiana's candidates for governor agreed the state needs to do more for education, but they disagreed strongly on how to pay for it during the second of three scheduled debates before the Nov. 4 election. Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels and Democratic challenger Jill Long Thompson differed sharply on whether leasing the state lottery was a viable option to pay for expanding higher education opportunities for Hoosiers. Libertarian Andrew Horning also took part in the hour-long event at the Jasper Arts Center in Jasper, about 100 miles southwest of Indianapolis.   Full Story

Utility to test 'smart grid'
A northern Indiana utility will test a system measuring electricity usage in about 10,000 homes and businesses in South Bend. The monitoring by Indiana Michigan Power will be the first using a "smart grid" technology that eventually could save customers money, utility spokesman David Mayne said.   Full Story

Obama out to flip Indiana to Dems
Democrats typically skip right over reliably Republican Indiana when plotting presidential campaign strategy. Not Barack Obama. The candidate from next-door Illinois is bidding to flip the state into the Democratic column this year. To that end, he is doing what no presidential candidate has done in decades - spending significant amounts of money and time in the state, while Republican John McCain maintains a low profile.   Full Story

House approves Great Lakes compact
The House ratified a compact yesterday to prevent diversion of water from the Great Lakes, one of the world's largest sources of fresh water. Eight Great Lakes states, including Indiana, negotiated the compact after more than four years of talks involving business, scientific and environmental interests. Supporters said the protections against diverting water were needed to guard the lakes from depletion. The compact, which was approved on a vote of 390-25, now moves to President Bush, who has said he will sign it.   Full Story

Anderson changes brokers at former GM site
The city of Anderson recently switched brokers on the massive 274-acre former General Motors site in an effort to attract tenants and businesses to the area. Anderson's redevelopment commission terminated its agreement with Columbus, Ohio-based Value Recovery Group and will now market the properties through local brokers Tom Willey and Kurt Mathewson of Coldwell Banker Commercial. Willey said the site - made up of three former GM facilities and adjacent parcels of vacant land - should appeal to investors during the sluggish economy. "There's a lot of investors looking for these types of properties to turn around," he said. "With the economy the way it is, you have a lot of investors looking at properties they can go in and refurbish."
