Grinding to a halt: 12 local Starbucks
At least 12 local Starbucks stores are slated to close by early next year as part of a 600-store nationwide purge. The chain is closing eight stores in Indianapolis and stores in Carmel, Greenwood, Beech Grove and Plainfield. About 200 people in central Indiana could lose their jobs in the move since each location employs about 20. Starbucks has said it hopes to move some affected employees to other stores.   Full Story

Cook name returns to airport street, terminal

The Indianapolis Airport Authority this morning stopped short of renaming Indianapolis International Airport for World War I flying ace Weir Cook, but compromised with supporters by tagging a major street and the new midfield terminal with his name. The road leading into the airport will be called Col. H. Weir Cook Memorial Drive. The $1.1 billion terminal, which is scheduled to open Oct. 28, will be dubbed H. Weir Cook Terminal.   Full Story

Buckingham gets rights to develop apartments
Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library officials last night voted 7-0 to pick Buckingham Cos. to redevelop the Ambassador apartment building adjacent to Central Library downtown. The Indianapolis property management also was awarded two other nearby properties. Renovations could begin by the end of September or early October, said Andy Klineman, Buckingham's senior legal counsel.   Full Story

WellPoint settles claims over dropping ill clients
Two of California's biggest health insurers have agreed to collectively pay $13 million and reinstate more than 2,000 insurance policies to settle claims with the state that they illegally dropped policyholders from coverage. Anthem Blue Cross, owned by Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc., will pay $10 million and reinstate coverage for 1,770 enrollees; Blue Shield of California, headquartered in San Francisco, will pay $3 million and reinstate coverage for 450 enrollees.   Full Story

Muncie call center adding 200 jobs in expansion
Lifetouch Inc., one of the nation's largest portrait photographers, plans to consolidate call centers elsewhere in the country into its Muncie operation, resulting in a building expansion and 200 additional workers over several years, according to The Star Press of Muncie. Headquartered in the Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie, Lifetouch takes school pictures and has studios in J.C. Penney and Target stores.   Full Story

Cummins, Fiat unwind joint diesel venture
Cummins Inc. and units of Fiat Group SpA will end their diesel engine joint venture European Engine Alliance, the companies said today. The European Engine Alliance was established in 1996 as a joint venture between Columbus-based Cummins and Fiat units Iveco NV and New Holland - which is now CNH Global NV, to develop new 4-, 5- and 6-liter engines. EEA includes manufacturing assets in Turin, Italy.   Full Story

Terre Haute lands call center, 480 jobs
NEW Customer Service Cos. Inc. plans to locate a customer support center in Terre Haute, and create 480 jobs by 2011, Indiana Economic Development Corp. announced yesterday. The Sterling, Va., company will hire employees for the Terre Haute location who will work from home to help callers fix problems with DirectTV satellite television service. Privately held NEW has eight call centers with 650 employees who work from home.

State ends fiscal year with balanced budget

Indiana's state government ended the latest fiscal year with its third consecutive balanced budget and a bigger surplus at a time when many states are making major spending cuts or considering tax increases to deal with deficits. State officials closed the books on the fiscal year ended June 30 with revenue exceeding spending by about $321 million. That's in part because of spending restraints Gov. Mitch Daniels ordered in December after revenue projections were lowered because of a sagging economy.   Full Story

Firefighter, photographers shot at house fire
An early morning fire at an abandoned house east of downtown turned into a crime scene when someone shot at emergency personnel and media. A photographer from WISH-TV Channel 8 and a freelance photographer working with the fire department were hit. A bullet also hit a firefighter's air tank, but the firefighter wasn't injured. The shootings happened at 833 N. Tacoma Ave. The photographers were treated at Methodist Hospital and released. Police have no suspects.

Nightclub shooting leads to car chase
Shots fired in the parking lot of Club Industry east of downtown resulted in police chasing a suspect and placing a maneuver on the sport-utility vehicle that caused the suspect to lose control and the SUV to flip. Police say dozens of cars were waiting to leave the club's parking lot when shots were heard between two vehicles. Police arrested the suspect and recovered a gun. No one was hurt.

Summer Celebration wraps up this weekend
Indiana Black Expo's Summer Celebration ends this weekend with several events. Hours at the Indiana Convention Center exhibit hall run until 9 p.m. today. Tomorrow, performances are scheduled at Conseco Fieldhouse from 9 p.m. until midnight. On Sunday, Eastern Star Church will have a praise and worship service at the fieldhouse from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Summer Celebration is the largest African-American event in the nation, attended by more than 300,000 people.
