Telamon plans to double local headcount
Carmel-based telecommunications firm Telamon Corp. announced this morning that it plans to add 250 jobs by 2012 and invest $3 million to update its local operations. The expansion would roughly double the 259 employees now at Telamon's Carmel headquarters. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered $1.25 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $230,000 in training grants. Carmel is considering an additional property tax abatement for the firm.   Full Story

Anthem Blue Cross to pay hospitals $11.8M
With California regulators recently pledging to renew their push to stop health insurers from wrongly dropping patients, Anthem Blue Cross has agreed to pay an $11.8 million rescission lawsuit settlement to about 400 California hospitals.

Hospitals and physicians joined forces in October 2006 to sue the state's largest insurer and its parent, Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc., because patients said Anthem Blue Cross illegally dropped them after they received treatment. The more than 30,000 physicians represented by co-plaintiff California Medical Association will "still move forward with the case," said spokesman Ned Wigglesworth.   Full Story

Conseco unit hit with class-action suit
A resident of Broward County, Fla., has filed a class-action lawsuit against a Conseco Inc. unit that allegedly failed to pay the maximum benefit for home health care insurance. Anna M. Cohen said Washington National denied the claim on grounds she reached the original $250,000 lifetime maximum benefit stated in her policy. However, the suit claims, the policy also provides for an 8-percent annual increase for all benefits.   Full Story

Wells Fargo buys American Med-Scan
Carmel-based American Med-Scan has been acquired for an undisclosed price by Wells Fargo Insurance Services Inc., Wells Fargo announced today. American Med-Scan's operations will be merged into the insurance brokerage's local offices.   Full Story

Lilly slapped for Cialis press release
A code-of-conduct committee in Australia has fined Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. $60,000 for a press release that the committee said promoted its Cialis erectile-dysfunction drug directly to the public. However, Lilly will not have to follow up with corrective ads, according to The Australian newspaper of Sydney. Lilly told the newspaper it was disappointed by the decision and considering a response.   Full Story

Panel to study contentious immigration issue
State lawmakers couldn't agree on a contentious illegal immigration bill during this year's legislative session. But some hope legislators on a summer study committee can at least reach common ground on the facts surrounding the complex topic. The House and Senate both passed versions of an immigration bill last session that would have created a three-tier punishment system for companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants after 2009.   Full Story

Bristol-Myers to upgrade Indiana facilities
Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. has agreed to upgrade plants it operates in Evansville and nearby Mount Vernon in order to cut output of a refrigerant that depletes ozone, the Justice Department and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said today. The Princeton, N.J., company agreed to the improvements after discovering problems with hydrochlorofluorocarbons during an internal audit of 25 sites it operates.   Full Story

GOP defends manufacturers of FEMA trailers
Republicans are blaming the federal government for not having standards for safe levels of formaldehyde in trailers used by Hurricane Katrina victims and made by four Indiana manufacturers. The manufacturers are Forest River Inc., Gulf Stream Coach Inc., Keystone RV Inc. and Pilgrim International Inc. All are headquartered in the recreational vehicle and manufactured housing center of north-central Indiana. Democrats say that's not the whole story, but haven't offered their view of the problems.   Full Story

Michigan firm hopped to Ohio, now Indiana
A company that plans to move its headquarters from Columbus, Ohio, to the northeastern Indiana town of Angola has been based in Ohio only three years. General Products Corp. was headquartered in Jackson, Mich., until 2005, when it accepted economic development incentives to move to Columbus, according to The Columbus Dispatch. Jobs created in Columbus will vanish when General Products moves to Angola.   Full Story

Cummins boosts quarterly dividend to 17.5 cents
Diesel engine maker Cummins Inc. today said its board increased its quarterly common-stock cash dividend to 17.5 cents. The new dividend represents a 40-percent increase. It was previously 12.5 cents. The dividend increase is Cummins' third since July 2006.

Indianapolis airport hosts job fair
Indianapolis International Airport officials hope a job fair today can help fill nearly 200 positions at the midfield terminal, set to open in October. Job openings include building technicians, custodians and maintenance workers, parking cashiers and public-safety officers. The fair runs until 8 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel at the airport. The event includes several retail outlets looking to hire. Fox 59 will have more at 10 p.m.

Former Indy cop goes on trial
The jury trial for Indianapolis metro police officer Jason Edwards begins today. Edwards and officers James Davis and Robert Long were indicted on federal charges of stealing money and marijuana last month. All three resigned from the force. Edwards had been an officer for eight years. The prosecutor's office has dropped dozens of cases involving Edwards.

11 homicides in nine days
Indianapolis metro police are now investigating the 11th homicide in nine days. Two people were found last night shot to death inside a home east of downtown. When officers responded to a 911 call at 226 Hendricks Place, they saw a person lying on the floor and then found a second person. The victims are a black man in his 20s and a white woman in her 20s or 30s. Anyone with information is asked to call 262-TIPS.

Grant program to spur greener practices
United Water Services, the city of Indianapolis and Local Initiatives Support Corp. plan to create a grant program aimed at promoting the use of greener, more environmentally friendly and energy efficient practices in building construction and storm water management. United Water, which was recently awarded the contract to operate and maintain the city's wastewater and storm water systems, will give $100,000 a year over the next four years to the Green Infrastructure Grant Program.   Full Story   Full Story
