| Incubator chief lands at life sciences firm Art Patterson, who launched Flagship Enterprise Center in Anderson and built the small-business incubator and accelerator into a three-building operation, has been named CEO at Elona Biotechnologies Inc. in Greenwood. Patterson left Flagship early this year after completing a four-year startup phase. Patterson wants to raise $10 million in equity and use debt and other forms of capital to expand Elona, which is owned by a former researcher for Eli Lilly and Co.
Steel Dynamics profit more than doubles Steel Dynamics Inc. said late yesterday its second-quarter profit more than doubled on a boost in shipments and higher selling values. The steel producer also raised its expectations for future quarters even though it said there could be a decline in steel and scrap shipments during the third quarter, followed by a weak fourth quarter. Second-quarter profit rose to $210.5 million, or $1.05 a share, from $93.9 million, or 48 cents a share, in the year-earlier period.

| | Airlines report losses, but stocks rise as oil falls The losses keep piling up for airlines, as three of the nation's biggest carriers said today high fuel costs overwhelmed higher revenue in the quarter that ended June 30. UAL Corp.'s United Airlines posted the biggest loss: $2.73 billion, or $21.74 a share. US Airways rolled up a $567 million loss, and JetBlue Airways Corp. posted a $7 million loss. In spite of the announcements, airline stock prices rose this morning as oil prices fell.
FedEx pursues lawsuit against bankrupt ATA FedEx Corp. has asked a bankruptcy court judge to allow it to sue ATA Airlines Inc. for breaching a contract to carry military personnel. The filing comes a month after ATA sued FedEx, claiming that it was forced into bankruptcy when FedEx notified ATA that the contract would end this fall. ATA was obligated to continue carrying troops until the contract ended Sept. 30, the FedEx suit says.
Zimmer to add 100 jobs in Warsaw expansion Warsaw-based Zimmer Holdings Inc. will create 100 jobs in a $19 million expansion of its foundry in the northern Indiana city, the Indiana Economic Development Corp. said yesterday. The 50,000-square-foot expansion will result in greater automation and produce 1.3 million castings a year for the prosthetics maker. The state offered 400,000 in tax credits based on jobs created. Zimmer has 2,800 workers in Warsaw.
Work starts on coal-gasification plant Months after a coal-gasification plant obtained a crucial air permit, Duke Energy Corp.'s CEO yesterday likened the $2.35 billion plant to an "Apollo project for energy" during a ceremony marking its official start of construction. Jim Rogers, Duke Energy's president and CEO, told Gov. Mitch Daniels and local officials that the 630-megawatt plant's technological innovations were akin to the United States' manned lunar program that beat the former Soviet Union to the moon in the 1960s. "With this plant we're taking a giant leap for our country," he said.

Three dead following domestic disturbance Police say a man killed his ex-wife, her boyfriend and ultimately himself early this morning in a domestic disturbance near Eagle Creek Park. The man entered his ex-wife's home at 5109 Winterberry Drive, shot and killed the boyfriend, and then abducted the former wife and her 13-year-old daughter. During an ensuing police chase ending at 25th and Meridian streets, the man shot and killed his former wife and then himself. The girl had a welt from being hit on the head. Police did not immediately release names of the victims. Fox 59 will have more at 10 p.m.
Lightning starts fires around Indianapolis Lightning from overnight storms sparked approximately 30 fires throughout the Indianapolis area. A two-alarm fire engulfed the roof at the Spinnaker Court apartments on the west side. Ten units were destroyed and more than 20 people are without a home. No injuries were reported. | | | | |
| Second Lucas Oil Stadium tour added This morning, Colts fans had another chance to get free tickets to tour Lucas Oil Stadium. A second tour, with 20,000 tickets, was added to the schedule due to high demand. Fans could pick up the tickets at the Conseco Fieldhouse box office or online at www.ticketmaster.com. The tour will take place on Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m.
