| First Indiana shareholders OK acquisition First Indiana Corp. shareholders today approved the local bank's sale to Milwaukee-based Marshall & Ilsley Corp., a deal First Indiana directors OK'd in July. The $529 million merger is expected to close in January. At the meeting at First Indiana Plaza, First Indiana patriarch Bob McKinney and his daughter, Marni, who chairs the board, introduced M&I's new Indiana regional president, Reagan Rick, and bade farewell to shareholders and directors. The McKinneys have been involved with First Indiana for more than 50 years.
Towne turning truck drivers into contractors Towne Air Freight LLC plans to offer about 200 of its truck drivers the chance to own their own rigs as the South Bend trucking firm follows an industry trend of outsourcing to contractors. At its Indianapolis terminal, 6430 Airway Drive near Indianapolis International Airport, about 35 drivers will receive the offer, said Jerry Scott, vice president of human resources. Towne wants to free capital tied up in trucks to compete with other carriers, many of whom already have made the change, Scott said. | | | | |

Martin University names new president Martin University has named Algeania Freeman to replace its founding president, Boniface Hardin, who is retiring. Freeman, 58, founded The Freeman Group Inc., a contractual consulting company. She also served as president of Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., from 2001 to 2004.
Controversial Shelbyville tech park gets funding Intelliplex, the state-certified technology park in Shelbyville that has drawn fire locally and caution from the state, has received a commitment from Shelby County commissioners for $125,000 in funding per year for 25 years. The action was taken Monday night as part of a series of decisions on how to spend economic development income taxes, according to The Shelbyville News.
Indiana, like other states, is short on pensions Indiana is more than $10 billion short of funding pensions that will be owed to retired state workers in the next three decades, a new report found. The Pew Charitable Trust's "Promises with a Price" report found other states in similar situations. Nationwide, states have saved enough to meet 85 percent of projected costs in pensions, health care and other retirement benefits, meaning they are short $731 billion collectively. Indiana is $10.6 billion short of the $29 billion the state expects to need for retirees in the next 30 years, according to the report.
Daniels-backed energy plant lands in Illinois A futuristic power plant aimed at burning coal without emitting global-warming gases will be built in Illinois, an industry group said yesterday. Known as FutureGen, the $1.8 billion facility near Mattoon, Ill., is expected to bring hundreds of jobs. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels forged an agreement with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in 2005 that called for Indiana supporting Illinois' bid, in return for Illinois pushing to land carbon-sequestration spinoffs from the plant in Indiana. It is not immediately known what sequestration projects might be created.
Coventry exec jumps to WellPoint WellPoint, Inc. will appoint John Langenus as senior vice president and president and CEO of its Anthem National Accounts division on Feb. 25, the company announced today. The division serves nearly 11 million customers. Langenus comes to WellPoint from Bethesda, Md.-based Coventry Healthcare, where he served as president of group health care for more than two years. Prior to Coventry, Langenus worked at Connecticut-based Evolution Benefits and Philadelphia-based Cigna Healthcare, where he was senior vice president of the national market segment.

| Fire destroys Westfield business Firefighters are investigating an overnight fire that destroyed Carmel Engineering Inc., 17650 Springmill Road in Westfield. No injuries were reported. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.
Neighbor rescues woman from fire A neighbor helped rescue an 85-year-old woman from her burning home in the 6500 block of Oakview Drive, near Eagle Creek Park, this morning. She was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
Father charged with shaking infant A Muncie man appeared in a Delaware County courtroom this morning on preliminary charges of aggravated battery, neglect and obstruction of justice after he allegedly shook his 3-month-old son, Juwaun, causing serious head injuries. The charges against Curtis Henley, 35, must be formally filed by Dec. 26. Juwaun was returned to the home Nov. 26 after having been removed by Child Protective Services. The incident happened Dec. 4.
