International, UAW reach tentative pact
International Truck and Engine Corp. reached a tentative agreement yesterday with the United Auto Workers leadership on three-year contracts for 3,700 striking workers, the company said. The deal covers about 1,600 workers at International's two plants at 5565 Brookville Road on the east side. The sites make diesel engines for Ford pickup trucks. UAW members were expected to vote this weekend on the agreement, although details were not publicly disclosed.   Full Story

Cummins shares rise on buyback news

Share prices of Columbus-based Cummins Inc. rose yesterday after the diesel engine maker declared a two-for-one stock split - its second of the year - and said it will repurchase $500 million in shares. Cummins shares rose $6.51, or 5.5 percent, to $124.70, after peaking at $127.59 early in the session. Wachovia's Andrew Casey backed his "Outperform" rating and $148 to $151 valuation range for Cummins stock, calling the two moves good news for the company's shareholders.   Full Story

Columbia Sussex Corp., the Fort Mitchell, Ky.-based owner of Casino Aztar in Evansville, has been denied a renewal of its license to operate the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. Yesterday's action by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission is only the second such denial in the 29 years gambling has been legalized in the state. The casino can stay open while Columbia Sussex finds a buyer, according to the Associated Press and Evansville Courier & Press.   Full Story

Soft demand prompts extended Cummins layoff
Cummins Inc.'s midrange engine plant in Walesboro will add a week to its Christmas break due to slowing demand for diesel engines in Dodge Ram pickup trucks. The holiday layoff will begin Dec. 17, a week early, and end Jan. 2, according to a spokesman for the Columbus company. About 540 workers are affected. Pickup makers have experienced mixed results offering larger incentives to lure buyers who are concerned about high fuel prices.

Amendment would keep churches tax-exempt
Lawmakers are considering a proposal to amend Indiana's constitution to exempt churches from property taxes - even though they are currently exempt and there seems to be little threat of that changing. Sen. Patricia Miller, R-Indianapolis, sponsored the resolution, which would start the years-long process of amending the state constitution. The amendment would prohibit property taxes from being charged on buildings and personal property used for religious worship. "We do not have a crisis today of taxing religious property," Miller said. "My concern is for the future."   Full Story

Blog: Mellencamp in R&R Hall of Fame
So Mellencamp will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Is it too soon, too late, or just the right time to celebrate our most famous rocker? Or maybe you think that celebrating rebel rockers at such an institution misses the point? Also, what do you want to see in next year's Broadway in Indianapolis season? Join the discussion at IBJ's new blog, Lou Harry's A&E.

Rape suspect identified

Police have identified the man they believe followed a woman to her Noblesville home, posed as a delivery man to gain access to the home, and then raped her. Officers say surveillance video from a store helped them identify Charles Farmer of Clarksville. Officers say Farmer also used the victim's credit card, which helped lead them to him as well.
Police warn shoppers to watch out for thieves
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police want shoppers to watch out for thieves targeting people at the Wal-Mart at 86th Street and Michigan Road on the northwest side. Performance pay plan scares hospitals
Tony Lennen likes the idea of pay-for-performance. But the CEO of Shelbyville's Major Hospital doesn't like the potential cost of a recent performance plan floated by the federal Medicare program. And most other smaller hospitals aren't likely to embrace it either. Officials of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services want to base a small part of Medicare's payments to hospitals on grades based on how well those hospitals treat each patient. Performance would be measured by such things as mortality rates and standards of care established by clinicians.   Full Story   Full Story
