| | "Assassins" Dec. 14-30 Hedback Theatre
In either a brilliant or deeply wrong holiday counterprogramming move, fledgling theater company Lowbrow Productions is presenting "Assassins," the Stephen Sondheim musical that focuses on people who have tried to kill U.S. Presidents.
A musical, you say? Absolutely. It's one of Sondheim's best, with a wide variety of musical styles (from cakewalk to '70s love ballad) taking audiences into the hearts and heads of, of course, John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, but also Charles Guiteau (Garfield, successful), Giuseppe Zangara (Franklin Roosevelt, unsuccessful), Sam Byck (Nixon, unsuccessful), Leon Czolgosz (McKinley, successful), Sara Jane Moore (Ford, unsuccessful) and others. It ain't "42nd Street," but you knew that.
To make a Sondheim double feature, check out Tim Burton's film version of "Sweeney Todd," opening in theaters Dec. 21.

"The Nutcracker" Dec. 13-16 Murat Theatre
As you may have heard, there are a number of companies filling the void left when Ballet Internationale folded and took its annual "Nutcracker" down with it. The production that has stirred the most debate in the arts community is this one, offered by the Cincinnati Balletwhich has been exploring the possibility of being a two-city company. For some, that raises the question: Do we want "our" ballet to be "their" ballet?
Of course, for many dance lovers, the bigger concern is how to ensure that more quality performances are offered on Indy stages. To see if this is a company you want here on a regular basis, the best thing to do is see it in action. And, this week, you can see it without taking an Ohio road trip. For more details, click here.

| "A Year with Frog and Toad" Dec 14-23 Pike Performing Arts Center
One of the unlikeliest shows to make it to Broadway in recent years was this musical-based on a fairly plot-less Caldecott award-winning book.
"Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" Dec. 14-Jan. 6 Indianapolis Civic Theatre Many decades ago, composer Andrew Lloyd Weber and lyricist Tim Rice wrote a 15-minute musical based on the Joseph story from Genesis. It became the little musical that grew and grew and grew, eventually leading to a full-scale production that has since birthed frequent road tours and regional productions-as well as a 1999 direct-to-video release. | | | | |
