| Shelbyville ad campaign luring Honda recruits An advertising blitz launched by Shelbyville officials to lure workers arriving at the Honda Manufacturing of Indiana plant in nearby Greensburg is working, one of its backers says. Dan Theobald, executive director of Shelby County Development Corp., is aware of at least seven families that have settled in Shelbyville as a result of the campaign, and he is certain more are arriving. Shelbyville probably would have missed out on the growth had it not rolled out the welcome mat to Honda workers coming from existing plants in Ohio and Alabama, Theobald said.
Bloomington publisher to expand Author Solutions Inc. will transfer jobs from China to its home base in Bloomington as part of an expansion announced today. The provider of self-publishing services will spend $4.5 million on the consolidation, which will add 140 jobs to its headquarters. Author Solutions already employs 230 in Bloomington, and another 50 in Indianapolis. It maintained a publishing operation in Shanghai. | | | | |
| | Gregg shares rise on quarterly profit report Shares of HHGregg Inc. are cheap, a Piper Jaffray analyst said yesterday, after the consumer-electronics retailer posted better-than-expected profit growth of 24 percent in its latest quarter. The Indianapolis-based retailer said Tuesday its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings per share rose to 32 cents excluding one-time items, 4 cents ahead of the average analyst estimate. Gregg stock has shot from a close of $10.95 per share on Tuesday to trade at $12.75 this morning - a 16.4-percent increase.
Cummins makes list of ethical companies Columbus-based Cummins Inc. is the only Indiana company to make this year's list of the world's 100 most ethical companies as determined by Ethisphere magazine. The list was decided through analysis of such characteristics as corporate citizenship and government, innovation contributing to public well-being, executive leadership, and regulatory track record. The companies are not ranked. Honeywell International Inc., of Morristown, N.J.; Sweden-based IKEA; and Nike Inc., of Beaverton, Ore., were among other companies making the list.
Bank replaces debit cards after security breach South Bend-based 1st Source Bank said yesterday it would replace debit cards for all its account holders following a security breach. A bank official said it had received no reports of suspicious activity. It found out about the breach from a security consulting firm that discovered it on May 12, the day the problem occurred. The bank shut down its computer system and contacted authorities.
Strike halts Clarian project in Lafayette A Laborers International Union strike in Lafayette has brought construction on a $200 million hospital Clarian Arnett Health is building there to a grinding halt. Clarian Arnett is a partnership between Clarian Health in Indianapolis and Arnett Health System, a multi-specialty medical practice in Lafayette. Laborers Local 274 escalated its protest from informational picketing on Monday to a work stoppage yesterday, according to The Journal & Courier of Lafayette.
Hallmark to stop making cards in Bloomington Sunrise Greetings, a unit of Hallmark Cards Inc., plans to stop manufacturing cards in Bloomington in early 2009, eliminating as many as 60 jobs there. Sunrise told employees yesterday that card manufacturing will be consolidated into a plant near Hallmark's headquarters in Kansas City, Mo. About 160 workers will stay in Bloomington.
Michigan music distributor closing local unit Handleman Co. plans to close the music portion of its warehouse near 56th Street and Georgetown Road, the Troy, Mich., company said this week. A notice filed with the state said 248 workers would lose their jobs. Handleman has specialized in distributing music to retailers, but Internet downloads have affected its business. The company had 330 employees in Indianapolis before the cuts. | | | |
| Lilly nears regulator decision on key cardio drug Eli Lilly and Co. may soon learn the fate of its cardio drug prasugrel, which is expected to become a key moneymaker for the company as it nears a wave of patent expirations for other products. The Food and Drug Administration could decide by June 26 whether to approve prasugrel, which would be Lilly's first new drug launched since 2005. Several analysts predict the drug will be approved.

Daniels surveys storm damage Gov. Mitch Daniels and other officials today are touring parts of central Indiana ravaged by this week's storms. Daniels went to Camp Atterbury in Johnson County, where the damage is estimated at $19 million. When the storm hit Tuesday night, it skipped over barracks where hundreds of soldiers were sleeping. In Rush County, other officials visited the tiny community of Moscow, where tornados destroyed a landmark covered bridge and school. Fox 59 will have more at 10 p.m.
State of emergency declared in Greene County A state of emergency has been declared in Greene County one day after storms devastated the area near Bloomington. In Bloomfield, downed power lines and trees uprooted by gusting winds left scattered structural damage. This is the second tornado in the area in four months. A temporary shelter is open in a church.
Rock throwers still at large State Police say Indianapolis drivers are being attacked from the Interstate 65 overpass at 52nd Street near Lafayette Road. On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights, sizeable rocks were dropped from the bridge, hitting cars below. Each of the reported incidents happened between 10 p.m. and midnight. Troopers are patrolling the area and urge anyone seeing suspicious activity around any bridges to call 911.
BioCrossroads hire want to link universities The big things on Michael Krupp's early to-do list revolve around getting universities in central Indiana and the San Diego area to work together much more closely. Krupp is the man Indianapolis-based BioCrossroads has hired to represent its LINX initiative in San Diego.
