| Finish Line may walk away from Genesco The Finish Line Inc. late this morning cast doubt on whether it will move forward with its $1.5 billion acquisition of Genesco Inc. after the Tennessee company reported a steep second-quarter loss. In a written statement, Finish Line said it is "disappointed" with Genesco's $4.2 million loss. "Consistent with its responsibilities to The Finish Line's shareholders, the company is evaluating its options in accordance with the terms of the merger agreement."
SMC tripling space with Noblesville move The new SMC Corp. of America facility in Noblesville will encompass 825,000 square feet, more than three times the space that the maker of pneumatic automation equipment occupies now at 3011 N. Franklin Road on the east side of Indianapolis. Mike Jones, who directs national distribution, said the existing facility was out of room to expand, and that the company wanted to stay close to its workers. | | Insight signs Big Ten Network, reports say New York-based Insight Communications reportedly signed a deal with the Big Ten Network today-the day before the network is set to launch, Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal and other outlets are reporting. Insight, which has 1.4 million customers in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio, has agreed to carry the Big Ten Network on its expanded basic package in Ohio, but is still determining where the network will appear on its systems in Illinois and Indiana. The network will be on a digital tier in the non-Big Ten state of Kentucky.
Brown County tourism chief resigns amid cuts The Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau is without a permanent leader after its longtime president and CEO resigned amid a budgeting conflict. Teresa Anderson quit Aug. 24 after the county Tourism Commission ordered the CVB to cut its personnel expenses, as well as split part of the Innkeepers Tax income with other organizations promoting tourism. A $30,000 shortfall in the bureau's annual budget of $570,000 and funding restrictions within several areas of the CVB prompted Anderson, who had been at the helm for 20 years, to resign.
Next Day Gourmet closing warehouse A distribution center operated by Next Day Gourmet at 1740 Stout Field Drive near Indianapolis International Airport is being closed, and the work sent to other warehouses, the company said today. Next Day Gourmet, which distributed restaurant equipment and supplies from the location, is owned by U.S. Food Service Inc. of Columbia, Md.

Muncie officer in hot water after alleged joy ride A Muncie police officer is on paid leave for what his superiors describe as "showing off for three college girls." Investigators say six-year veteran Jason Lyons took three Ball State University freshmen for a joy ride that ended in a crash Aug. 28. Police Chief Joe Winkle says Lyons was speeding and acting unprofessionally. All three students were examined at Ball Memorial Hospital and released. | | | |
| Man, niece in good condition after mower accident Police say alcohol may have been a factor in a crash that sent a Logansport girl and her uncle to the hospital Aug. 28. The 7-year-old was riding on the hood of the uncle's lawn mower when he pulled onto West County Road 400 South. The two were hit by an oncoming truck and rushed to the hospital. Charges have not been filed.
Spinach tests positive for salmonella California-based Metz Fresh LLC is recalling more than 8,000 cases of Metz Fresh bagged spinach after some of it tested positive for salmonella. No illnesses have been reported.

State needs public cord blood bank, CEO says The CEO of a private company that stores blood from umbilical cords is calling on the state to launch a publicly funded bank to store the blood, which is needed for transplants and has potential to be turned into treatments for cancer, cardiovascular and blood diseases, and other conditions. Eric Woods, of Indianapolis-based Genesis Bank , said a publicly funded bank would make the storage accessible to more than private individuals who currently can afford to store blood for their own use at private facilities like Genesis Bank.
