WRTV launches Indy's first 7 p.m. newscast
WRTV-TV Channel 6 will launch a 7 p.m. newscast Sept. 10 to coincide with the first day of the station's new anchors, Todd Wallace and Trisha Shepherd. WRTV will be the only local station with a 7 p.m. newscast. General Manager Don Lundy said the addition is intended to give viewers who arrive home after long days at work another option to watch the news.   Full Story

Will Buffett pounce on devalued WellPoint?
Billionaire investor Warren Buffett in recent years has wanted to make a massive acquisition but held back, he said, because private equity funds were bidding up prices. Now, with shares of companies like Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc. dropping and private equity firms pulling in reins due to rising financing costs, the Berkshire Hathaway Inc. chairman finally might be ready to make his move, according to Bloomberg. The holding company
said in last year's annual report that it needs to make big acquisitions to generate "truly satisfactory" earnings growth. Berkshire reported in May that it had accumulated nearly 1 million WellPoint shares.   Full Story

American Home Mortgage files bankruptcy
American Home Mortgage Corp. sought bankruptcy protection today, the latest casualty in a mortgage industry that has plunged into distress. The filing follows a week of turmoil for what had been the nation's 10th-biggest provider of home loans. The company announced last week that it was closing its mortgage business. It operated offices in Carmel, Greenwood and Plainfield.   Full Story

First Internet Bancorp profit jumps 8 percent
Indianapolis-based First Internet Bancorp reported today that second-quarter profit increased 8 percent, to $846,662, on across-the-board strength. The parent of First Internet Bank of Indiana said profit for the first half of the year was up 18 percent. First Internet's ongoing integration of Landmark Financial Corp., which it acquired in January for $12 million, will continue to produce efficiencies, CEO David Becker said.   Full Story

Ethanol boosting food prices, economist says
Food prices are rising faster than prices for other consumer products because ethanol plants are consuming more corn, Purdue University economists say. Food prices will edge up as much as 4 percent this year and next year, the economists told The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne. Ethanol plants are bidding up the price of corn, traditionally a key feed grain fed by livestock farmers.

Peterson expected to trim fat from already lean budget
Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson will unveil his 2008 budget tonight to the City-County Council. Peterson has ordered a hiring freeze and delayed buying new equipment. He also has asked every department except for public safety to cut back. Peterson says the moves are needed because of a projected $52 million shortfall stemming from the property tax crisis. Fox 59 News will have more at 10 p.m.

Police chase ends in crash
For at least the sixth time in a week, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police had to chase down a suspect who tried to get away in a car. The latest pursuit started around 1:45 a.m. this morning and ended 15 minutes later when the driver crashed her car at 16th Street and Lynbrook Drive on the east side. The woman complained of having epilepsy. Officers are investigating whether she had been drinking.
Anderson dress code controversy to be heard in court
Laura and Scott Bell's lawsuit contending Anderson Community School Corp.'s new dress code violates the state Constitution's guarantee of free public education heads to federal court today.

Fallen Indiana soldiers remembered in services
Family and friends of two fallen Indiana soldiers are remembering the soldiers' lives today. The viewing for Sgt. Ryan Fritsche is in Martinsville today, followed by the funeral tomorrow. The National Guard will honor Army Reservist Zachariah Gonzalez at Indianapolis International Airport when his body is flown in today. His viewing is tomorrow in Carmel.
