| | Labor Day Street Fair, Sept. 3 at 54th and College Ave. At most street festivals, the music seems-if not an afterthought-anything but the primary focus of attention. Just about any decent cover band will do when you're shopping for art, supervising the kids' craft projects, or trying to pick the perfect Sno-cone flavor. This nondescriptly named free fest, however, takes a different approach. The acts performing on the Jazz Kitchen's outdoor deck represent some of the area's most impressive jazz talent. The day starts with Frank Glover on sax and Claude Sifferlen on the piano at 12:30. At 2:30, the 10-piece Midcoast Swing Orchestra kicks in, offering music in the spirit of the great Harlem dance bands. Finally, Rob Dixon & Trilogy close out the show on a funky note (or, I should say, funkier notes) beginning at 4:30. Food will be available from The Jazz Kitchen (of course) and Yat's.

Pat Benatar, Aug. 31 at the Rib America Festival in Military Park In 1999, when VH1 compiled its list of the 100 Greatest Women in Rock &Roll, it placed Pat Benatar at number 39.
| Benatar | An honor, certainly, but come on. This is the woman who kicked women into the arena rock mainstream in the early '80s (okay, she was helped by Joan Jett and Chrissie Hynde, but still). She had the second video ever played on MTV (and who really cares about the first band, the Buggles), landed Grammy nominations in eight years of the decade (which resulted in an unprecedented four back-to-back-to-back-to-back wins), had a long, long string of hits ("Hit Me With Your Best Shot," "Heartbreaker," "Love is a Battlefield," "Hell is for Children," "Invincible," et. al) and saw six of her albums go platinum and another four gold. Surely Benatar's mark on rock should have earned her a higher spot than Bjork at 36, Barbra Streisand at 31 (Yeah, she's a rocker), Joan Baez at 27 (Go on, name two of her songs), Marianne Faithfull at 25 (One memorable hit and a thing with Mick), Etta James at 19 (It's called the blues, not rock.) and Patsy Cline at 11 (Calling her anything but country is, well, crazy.)
Where Benatar is concerned, you can judge for yourself. She'll be in town Friday the 31, rocking Rib America with her long time guitarist/husband Neil Giraldo.

| River City Brass Band, Sept. 1-2 at Conner Prairie Amphitheatre When is an Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra concert not an Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra concert? When it's the end of summer and the ISO turns over Conner Prairie Amphitheatre to out-of-town acts, each with a strong-but niche, nonetheless-appeal. For full preview, click here .
Jackson Wiley Tribute Concert, Sept. 2 at Clowes Memorial Hall It's usually not particularly exciting to be at someone else's college reunion. But when more than 100 alumni musicians get together in celebration of longtime Butler Symphony Orchestra conductor Jackson Wiley, it doesn't matter where you did your undergraduate time.
