Haverstick to be acquired for $90M
Haverstick Consulting Inc., the Carmel defense-consulting firm, is being acquired by Kratos Defense & Security Solutions Inc. of San Diego for $90 million. Kratos' announcement late this morning did not discuss the future of Haverstick's employees. Financial backers of Haverstick include former Conseco executives Stephen Hilbert and Rollin Dick.   Full Story

Lilly to launch new test of blood thinner

After reporting mixed results on a potentially lucrative blood thinner, Eli Lilly and Co. plans a new late-stage test of prasugrel for patients not receiving stents to open clogged heart arteries. Lilly and its development partner, Daiichi Sankyo Co. Ltd., plan to submit the drug for regulatory approval before the end of this year; the new trial should begin next year. Lilly and Daiichi hope prasugrel eventually becomes a strong rival to Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.'s $6 billion-a-year Plavix.   Full Story

Survey: Residents feel less safe downtown
Fewer people feel safe downtown, particularly after dark, the latest annual survey from the IUPUI Department of Tourism, Conventions and Event Management shows. Seventy-five percent feel safe downtown compared to 83 percent two years earlier, the survey found. After dark, only 34 percent feel safe; that figure declined from 44 percent in the 2005 survey. However, most respondents gave the city high marks for cleanliness, friendly people and cultural attractions.

Bank of America keeps local LaSalle chief
LaSalle Bank's purchaser is keeping on Keith Slifer, head of LaSalle's commercial lending services in Indianapolis, and giving him additional responsibilities. Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America Corp., which bought LaSalle Oct. 1, has put Slifer in charge of its commercial banking operations in Indiana and Ohio.   Full Story

Tax has town of Santa Claus up in arms
With the holidays approaching, the southern Indiana town of Santa Claus is anything but jolly. A dispute is brewing in the town of 2,300 over how much the Holiday World & Splashin' Safari amusement park should pay toward the cost of a $10 million water supply project. Although the theme park has shown a willingness to pay a water rate far exceeding that of residential customers and to make a $300,000 investment in getting the water project started, Holiday World's management vehemently opposes the idea of a tax on park tickets.   Full Story

'Chrysler' might vanish from New Castle school
Four years after Chrysler sold its New Castle plant, school officials are weighing whether to remove the word Chrysler from a local high school's name. New Castle School Board President Marilyn Bowman will push for New Castle Chrysler High School to be renamed during the board's Nov. 12 meeting. "Chrysler is gone," Bowman told The Star-Press of Muncie. "They left the community."   Full Story

Emmis magazine retracts glowing Vick article
Atlanta Magazine , which is owned by Indianapolis-based Emmis Communications Corp., has published an unusual retraction to a fawning profile of disgraced Falcons quarterback Michael Vick it published four years ago. The magazine reprinted the article but with observations in red handwriting, portions marked out and other changes. A section of one sentence, "You know about Vick," is highlighted in yellow with an arrow tracing to an artists' rendering of Vick in a courtroom. Vick has been suspended from the NFL and is awaiting a sentence on dog-fighting charges. Candidates make final push before election
Tomorrow, all eyes will be on a close mayoral race in Indianapolis between incumbent Bart Peterson and his Republican challenger, Greg Ballard. Lawrence voters also will chose a mayor, while City-County Council seats across Marion County will be up for grabs. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Fox 59 will have more at 10 p.m. on what candidates are doing leading up to the election.

Colts move on after Patriot loss
The Indianapolis Colts' perfect season is over. They led New England 20-10 with just under 10 minutes left, but Patriots quarterback Tom Brady rallied his team with two straight touchdown passes to beat the Colts 24-20. Indianapolis travels to San Diego next week to play the Chargers.
Police arrest counterfeit ring suspects
Three men are in custody, accused of selling phony tickets to the Colts game. Police say they found nearly 200 fake tickets inside the suspects' car after pulling them over for speeding southeast of downtown. Officers believe the men, all of whom are from Atlanta, are part of a nationwide counterfeit ring.

IPS holding last meeting to discuss closures
Parents and neighbors today get their final chance to voice opinions about the Indianapolis Public Schools plan to close eight schools. Superintendent Eugene White says the move is necessary because of declining enrollment. The meeting will be at Northwest High School, 5525 W. 34th St., at 7 p.m.
