"The Two and Only"
Warren Performing Arts Center, Nov. 10
You can imagine the snickers when it was announced that Jay Johnson, the ventriloquist best known for his stint on the sitcom "Soap," would be doing a sort-of one-man show on Broadway. What's next, plate spinners?

But the evening with Johnson and his wooden pals turned out to be a hit, with audiences charmed by this throwback, making it one of the head-scratchers of recent Broadway history. Think about it: We are so used to hearing over-miked performers on stage, that hearing someone's voice come from elsewhere these days hardly seems surprising. Yet Johnson and his menagerie pull it off. And they've taken their show on the road, stopping here for a one-nighter at the Warren Performing Arts Center. For more information, click here.

"Stars of the Ballet"
Butler University, Nov. 10
Butler BalletButler Ballet expands its season this year with two full-length works ("The Nutcracker" and "Giselle"), as well as two programs of shorter pieces. The first of these is a reunion, of sorts, reintroducing Indy audiences to Butler grads who have gone on to perform with such acclaimed companies as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Ballet Austin, Louisville Ballet and our own Dance Kaleidoscope. Choreography is also by Butler alums. More information here.

Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra
Indiana History Center, Nov. 10
Usually, I'm not terribly interested in the overtly gimmicked. And I probably would just smile and skip over the closing piece in this ICO performance as well. For full preview, click here.

Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival
Landmark's Keystone Art Cinema, Nov. 9-11
Want to see a wide range of films this weekend? Then you might have better luck at this annual gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered fest than in your local multiplex. For full preview, click here.

Judith Viorst
Jewish Community Center, Nov. 12
There are few kids' books better known than "Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good, Very Bad Day." But what may not be known is that the subject was a real kid and that his author/mother Judith Viorst has now written a non-fiction account of her now-grown-up son's recent return home. For full preview, click here.
This Week's Contest
Looking for a great night of jazz? We're going to make it easy for you. We're giving away a pair of tickets to see Sara Caswell and her jazz trio at the Sara CaswellIndiana History Center and throwing in a copy of her CD "But Beautiful" (featuring terrific takes on "The Way You Look Tonight," "Bye Bye Blackbird," Billy Joel's "And So It Goes" and others). Adding vocal support on the disc is Caswell's sister, Rachel, who will also be part of the Nov. 15 Indy gig. And it's something of a homecoming for Caswell, who music aficionados will remember as a competitor in the 2002 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (which is co-sponsoring this concert).

Want to go? Just fill out the form here. We'll pick one winner at random.
While there, answer our question of the week: What is your favorite cover version of any song? In other words: your top pick for a recording performed by someone who didn't originate or make the song famous.

You won't increase your chances of winning, but we may include your response in our list of favorites. Last week, we asked you to name your least favorite performance by a stand-up comic in a movie. Our favorite responses are here.

And congratulations to last week's contest winners, Kyle Carnes, Beatrice Bursten and Erin Beaver, who each won a pair of tickets to see Dane Cook in concert at Conseco Fieldhouse.
