 | | Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys Feb. 2 Music Mill If you dig banjo music, if you have a longing to hear "Orange Blossom Special" or "Man of Constant Sorrow" without irony, if you bought the soundtrack to "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" and/or if you believe in paying attention when a living legend (he was officially declared one by the Library of Congress in 2000) comes to town, then you'll want to get to see bluegrass great Ralph Stanley, still on tour at age 80. "Jesus Christ Superstar" Feb. 5-6 Murat Theatre
When Ted Neeley played the title role in the film version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" in 1973, he was 30 years old. In the most recent tour of the perennially popular musical, he's still playing the same part at the age of, well, you do the math. The show has aged as well--in an interesting way. What was once perceived heretically has been widely embraced by religious and secular audiences alike (although it's difficult to imagine even the most pious crowds forgiving Sebastian Bach's performance in the most recent "JCS" to come through town).
Sharing the minimalist stage this time around is Corey Glover, lead singer of the band Living Color, as Judas. For more details, click here. B.B. King Feb. 2 Murat Theatre Did I just mention living legends a few paragraphs back? Well, here's another, this one needing no introduction besides "Ladies and gentlemen ... Mr. B.B. King."
And having seen him just a few months ago, let me add that the thrill ain't gone. For more details, click here. | | | |
