City to announce Super Bowl point person

City to announce Super Bowl point person
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard this week plans to name a point person to head the city's bid for the 2012 Super Bowl. Ballard spokesman Marcus Barlow said today the mayor's office wants to move forward with the bid and that other leaders are falling into place. John Lechleiter, who will become CEO of Eli Lilly and Co. in April, will again lead fundraising.   Full Story

Market tries to rebound after early sell-off
Wall Street struggled to steady itself this morning, climbing back from an early plunge after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates to restore stability to a faltering U.S. economy. The Dow Jones industrials, down 465 points at the start of the session, recovered to a loss of about 162 points, to 11,936.8, by midday.   Full Story

Key legislator hospitalized
State Sen. David Ford of Hartford City, who has pushed a number of economic development measures, is hospitalized in Fort Wayne with what a fellow senator says is a serious illness. Sen. Luke Kenley says Ford has been absent from the Statehouse since last week and asked for a moment of silent prayer for Ford before a committee hearing today.   Full Story

State job growth weak in 2007
Last year was a yawner for job creation in Indiana, according to new figures from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Only 5,800 jobs were added, making 2007 the second year in a row for nearly stagnant growth. However, Indiana performed better than other Great Lakes states.   Full Story

GE closing could hurt Bloomington non-profits
If General Electric Co. follows through on its plan to close its Bloomington refrigerator plant, local not-for-profits are likely to feel the pain. Employees at the sprawling facility donated $54,000 last year to the Monroe County United Way and the company gave another $21,500. That made GE the second-largest work place contributor, according to The Herald-Times of Bloomington.   Full Story

Johnson County hospital board: no sale
Board members of Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin are willing to work with outside parties but have no plans to sell or merge the facility, the Daily Journal of Franklin reported today. In a statement, the board of the 149-bed, county owned hospital asked Johnson County residents for patience as it evaluates its short- and long-term future.   Full Story

Wood company closing 2 Indiana plants
Wood production company Universal Forest Products Inc. said yesterday it has closed a half-dozen plants in the United States and Canada, including sites in Elkhart and Westville, in response to the weak housing market. The plants will be listed for sale and their operations consolidated into other facilities.   Full Story

Motor maker lays off 52 in southern Indiana

Emerson Motor Co. has laid off nearly a third of the workers at an electric motor plant in the southern Indiana town of Princeton, the St. Louis company said late last week. Fifty-two of the 170 employees were put on temporary layoff after the market softened, Emerson said. The plant makes motors for hospital beds and other medical equipment.

Local tech leaders speaking today at IU
A pair of local high-tech heavyweights are scheduled to speak today at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. Bob Laikin, CEO of Plainfield-based wireless device distributor Brightpoint Inc., will visit the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Bloomington as a distinguished entrepreneur-in-residence. This evening in Indianapolis, Ping Poulsen, CEO of Safis Solutions LLC, will speak at the IU Kelley School of Business course called "The Business of Life Sciences: Global Events and Trends Impacting Life Sciences Industries."   Full Story

Snow hits Central Indiana
Thousands of Hoosier commuters dealt with snowfall and strong winds as they made their way into work this morning. Some parts of central Indiana had gusts over 30 mph. Up to 2 inches of snow fell in some areas. Major highways and interstates remain clear, but Fox 59 Meteorologist Jim O'Brien calls for more snow tomorrow evening and much colder temperatures on Thursday. Fox 59 will have the latest weather forecast at 10 p.m.

First suspect appears in court
One of the four men charged in last week's quadruple murder at 3283 Hovey St., near East 30th Street and East Fall Creek Parkway, appeared in court this morning. Zarumin Coleman is accused of violating the terms of community corrections. He also faces a charge of conspiracy to commit robbery. Hearings for the other three men have not been scheduled, according to the prosecutor's office.

BSU policeman goes on trial
A Ball State University policeman accused of using excessive force in the 2003 death of a student goes on trial today in the U.S. District Court in Indianapolis. A wrongful death lawsuit filed against Robert Duplain claims he shot and killed Michael McKinney, 21, while responding to a report of a stranger pounding on the door of a house in Muncie. The officer says he shot McKinney after the student charged at him, but the lawsuit claims Duplain shot McKinney twice in the back before shooting him two more times.

Dungy to remain in Indy
Colts head coach Tony Dungy announced he will remain with the team for at least one more season. Dungy's announcement put to rest rumors of a possible retirement. While Dungy's long-term future is still unknown, Colts owner Jim Irsay says this season won't be just a "victory lap" for the coach. In his six seasons with the Colts, Dungy has compiled a 73-23 regular season record.
