Dance Kaleidoscope presents "Funny Feet" Jan. 3-6 Indiana Repertory Theatre
With the snow barely brushed off the "Christmas Carol" set, Dance Kaleidoscope is taking over the IRT mainstage with this lighthearted production. If, theatrically, tragedy is easy but comedy is hard (as the saying goes), then in dance, comedy is even harder. Besides, we are not accustomed to laughing at dance-unless it's watching your drunk uncle in your wedding video.
For this original show, DK creates three pieces: "Merry Mozart," "G&S.com" (featuring the music of Gilbert & Sullivan) and "In the Moog" (to the synthesized sounds of Bach. For more details, click HERE.
"City Lights" Jan. 4-10 Key Cinemas
Yes, I love the Landmark's Keystone Arts Cinema on the north side, but let us not forget the independent (and confusingly similarly named) Key Cinemas to the south. With consistently inventive programming-and a dedication to working with local independents-the theater's Web site should be parked in the "favorites" file of anyone who claims to love movies. This week, for instance, it's offering a chance to see Charlie Chaplin's masterpiece "City Lights." If you haven't seen this one-or haven't seen it on the big screen-prepare for big, big laughs as well as one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful final moments in movie history. For more details, click HERE.
"Elvis Birthday Bash" Jan. 4 Locals Only
The Messarounds, Hey Hey Melodica, Little Voice and Jay Elliot of Stereo Deluxe produce the sounds for this all-day celebration of all-things King.
Here are a few Elvis facts to drop into your conversation between sets:
| Elvis called J. Edgar Hoover "the greatest living American."
Elvis' shoe size was 11D.
Elvis liked Brut aftershave.
Elvis' blood type was O Positive.
Elvis' Social Security number was 409-52-2002.
Yours truly spent New Year's Eve 1981 in the home of Mickey Shaughnessy, the guy who played Elvis' cellmate in "Jailhouse Rock." Unfortunately, Shaughnessy wasn't there at the time (long story).

"Backyard: A Look at Suburban Backyard Living" Jan. 4-26 Harrison Center for the Arts
| Yes, the 4th is the first Friday of the year. It's also the first Friday of the month, which means an anything-can-happen reception at the Harrison Center for the Arts.
This time, the sprawling space is hosting "Backyard: A Look at Suburban Backyard Living," which was to have opened the Midwest Museum of Contemporary Art in Carmel. MMCA is still presenting the event, although, noticeably to the south. Artists include Emily Kennerk, whose work was recently featured at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. For more details, click HERE .
This week's contest
This week, win tickets to see "A Chorus Line"/"The Way We Were"/"Nobody Does It Better" composer Marvin Hamlisch (one of only a handful of artists to win an Emmy, an Oscar, a Tony and a Grammy). He'll be in town performing with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and you could be there.
How?
Just fill out the form HERE. We'll pull one winner at random on Jan. 8.
While filling out the form, just for fun, suggest a title for an unwritten song. Maybe Hamlisch will read it and the rest will be history. Of course, we're not promising anything.
We'll link you to representative responses next week. Last week, we asked for your favorite guilty pleasure movie-the movie you love that you think everyone hates. Responses are HERE.
We pulled one winner at random, Chelsea Church, who won a copy of "In the Can: The Greatest Career Missteps, Sophomore Slumps, What-Were-They-Thinking Decisions and Fire-Your-Agent Moves in the History of the Movies" (co-written by yours truly).
Continuing: Still-running events from previous IBJ Daily A&E e-mails.
