Checkmark Cirque Dreams. If you're having dreams like this, careful what you eat before bedtime.
Checkmark Jon McLaughlin. He's from Indiana. His album is called "Indiana." He's back in Indiana.
Checkmark X-Fest. How appropriate - Smashing Pumpkins in October.
Checkmark "The Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah." Adventurous theater-goers may regret missing this one.
Checkmark "Headless Horseman Unscripted." We're guessing at least one character will have trouble with the verbal humor.

"Cirque Dreams: Jungle Fantasy," Oct. 9-14 at Clowes Hall
Cirque Dreams: Jungle FantasyI'm convinced that, somewhere in an unnamed European country there's a breeding ground for the newfangled circus performers who populate the various Cirque troupes. How else can you explain the armies of aerial acrobats, nonsense-opera-singing sopranos, and bald people who can balance on each other's heads?

Another such production comes to town this week as part of the Indianapolis Broadway Series. This one, "Cirque Dreams: Jungle Fantasy," features all of the above — plus a cylinder balancer (try putting that on your resume under "skills"). Note: This is not part of Cirque du Soleil. For more details, click here.

Jon McLaughlin, Oct. 13 at the Murat Egyptian Room
John Mellencamp isn't the only Hoosier musician with a JM monogram getting attention this fall. With recent appearances at Lollapalooza and other festivals, strong critical reaction to his album titled "Indiana," and a song in the upcoming Disney flick "Enchanted," Jon McLaughlin is a talent to watch — and listen to. He's also got a great back story. The Anderson native broke both wrists in an accident while he was still in high school. The music stayed with him, though, and his recovery took him to the Anderson University School of Music, whose own record label, Orangehaus, released his first album. For this concert, he's opening for Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini, but you should expect McLaughlin to be headlining gigs like this soon. More information at livenation.com.

X-fest, Oct. 6 at Verizon Wireless Music Center
Smashing Pumpkins — the revised version still featuring front man Billy Corgan — headlines this last gasp of the summer concert season at Verizon Wireless Music Center (OK, so Insane Clown Posse will be here just before Halloween, but we're not counting that). Joining Corgan and company are Fuel, Hurt, Another Animal (featuring former members of Godsmack), and an edgy platoon of others. For more details, click here.

"The Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah,"
Oct. 3-7 at Butler University's Lilly Hall

Looking for something completely different from what you'll see on any other area stage? For full preview, click here.

"Headless Horseman Unscripted," through Oct. 31 at ComedySportz
The late slot at our town's home for improvisational comedy is taken over by this fill-in-the-blank version of the Washington Irving classic. For full preview, click here.
Hoosier Storytelling Festival, Oct. 10-14 at
Military Park and the Indiana History Center

Once a year, Storytelling Arts of Indiana gathers a group of disparate tale-tellers to remind us that the pleasures of hearing a story are primal. For full preview, click here.

This week's contest:
Win a family pack of four tickets (how you define family is, of course, up to you) for the Oct. 20 one-night-only performance by Avner the Eccentric at the Pike Performing Arts Center. All you have to do is tell us the name you'd give yourself if you were a clown. We'll pull one winner at random ... and also post our favorite responses on ibj.com.

Avner the Eccentric Congratulations, by the way, to last week's winner, Cassie Hall, who won a pack of tickets to the Hoosier Storytelling Festival, along with a CD and copy of the new book "The Scenic Route: Stories from the Heartland." For that contest, we asked readers to simply tell us the first line of a story. See what some of them said here.

For more information on the performance of Avner the Eccentric, click here. To enter this week's contest, click here.
