One step forward, one back for manufacturing
News late last week that a manufacturing plant in Wabash employing 800 will close before December continues the good news-bad news Indiana is experiencing with the industry. For every expansion announcement, there seems to be another about a contraction or outright closing. On Friday, GDX Automotive, an auto parts supplier headquartered in Farmington Hills, Mich., said that its Wabash plant would close as part of the company's sale to MAPS Holdings Inc. of Madison Heights, Mich., another Detroit suburb.   Full Story

WellPoint enlists Zagat to rate doctors

After making a reputation rating highbrow restaurants in New York, the Zagat Survey now will help WellPoint Inc.'s health insurance customers rate their doctors. In January, WellPoint and Zagat will launch an online survey tool that will allow patients to share their physician experiences with other WellPoint customers. The tool will allow consumers to review their doctor visits based on trust, communication, availability and environment. The doctor survey also will feature a comments section.   Full Story

Calumet buys petro-products firm for $240M
Calumet Specialty Products Partners LP, the Indianapolis company that produces specialized petroleum-based products, has bought Texas-based Penreco for $240 million. Penreco is a general partnership owned by ConocoPhillips Co. and M.E. Zukerman Specialty Oil Corp. that manufactures and markets white mineral oils, and other petroleum products and specialty solvents. It is headquartered in The Woodlands, a Houston suburb.   Full Story

Business owner sentenced for polluting
The owner of a Miller Environmental, a chemical company that dumped oily wastewater and chemicals into Shelbyville's and Rushville's sewer systems, has been sentenced to four months in prison. A federal judge also fined Anthony McCullough, 64, of Bargersville $340,000.   Full Story

Shoppers line up at new Cabela's in Hammond
Friday's turnout for the opening of the new Cabela's store in Hammond might presage how the outdoor retailer will be received when it opens its location next fall south of Indianapolis at Interstate 65 and County Line Road. About 150 people waited outside for the opening of the 185,000-square-foot location. Cabela's expects about 100,000 customers in the first three weeks. Police had extra officers outside the store on the site of a former country club.   Full Story

Crash kills 5, injures 11
Indiana State Police believe a blown tire caused a deadly van accident yesterday afternoon on Interstate 69 in Delaware County. The 15-passenger van carrying two Amish families was traveling southbound. Winesses said they saw a tire blow before the van crossed over the median and flipped onto the northbound lanes. A Rockville family, including three children and their parents, were killed. Four other children from that family and seven people from a Fort Wayne family also were hurt. Fox 59 News will have the latest at 10 p.m.


Mulch fire closes part of I-465
Firefighters say spontaneous combustion caused a massive mulch fire on the city's northwest side yesterday afternoon. The fire started at Tiffany Lawn and Garden Supply on Robison Road. Heavy smoke forced police to close the right lanes of I-465 in each direction from I-865 to Michigan Road for a short time. No one was hurt.

New center to alleviate jail overcrowding
After four years of planning, the Duvall Community Corrections Facility at 18th and Ludlow Avenue opens today. The center northeast of downtown has 350 beds and will house non-violent offenders. Inmates will participate in educational courses and treatment programs, and are required to have an outside job.

FFA convention activities start today
More than 55,000 people are expected to attend the 80th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis this week. It officially begins Wednesday, but there are activities earlier in the week. Those include tonight's dedication of the new National FFA Merchandise Center on the northwest side of Indianapolis.
