Marion tech startup to create 280 jobs
Veriana Networks Inc., a startup specializing in technology, media and risk management for the entertainment industry, plans to announce this afternoon that it will create 280 jobs by 2012 in its headquarters city of Marion. Veriana will locate in a 252-acre lifestyle project also to be announced at a news conference in the city north of Muncie. The project is at Interstate 59 and State Road 18 near a new Dollar General warehouse and a new Ivy Tech Community College campus.   Full Story

Berry to build headquarters in Evansville

Berry Plastics Group Inc., an Evansville-based maker of plastics cups, announced today it will build a $20 million global headquarters and create 250 jobs. The move follows its March consolidation with Covalence Specialty Materials Holding Corp. of Bedminster, N.J. Berry has 1,200 workers in Evansville, the vast majority of whom are blue-collar. The company has another 12,600 employees at 55 other manufacturing facilities.   Full Story

Lilly buys rights to pain-fighting compound
Eli Lilly and Co has agreed to buy rights to an experimental compound for the treatment of various pains, including pain associated with osteoarthritis, from Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd India. Lilly will pay a $45 million upfront fee as well as up to $215 million more in potential development and sales milestones, plus royalties. The compound, GRC 6211, is in early, mid-stage trials. If the drug is approved for use, the deal would give Lilly the right to market the drug in North America, Europe and Japan; Glenmark would retain marketing rights in all other countries.

ImmuneWorks gets $300,000 seed investment
ImmuneWorks has received a $300,000 investment from Indiana Seed Fund I to help the Indianapolis company research a manufacturing process for a drug it is developing to fight idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease. The fund is managed by BioCrossroads, the not-for-profit that promotes the life sciences industry in the state. Founded last year by Dr. David Wilkes and other Indiana University School of Medicine researchers, ImmuneWorks also is developing blood tests to diagnose the disease and track patient progress while the disease is being treated.

Kitty Hawk closes Fort Wayne cargo hub
A sorting facility at Fort Wayne International Airport has closed, eliminating about 300 jobs. Dallas-based Kitty Hawk Inc. closed its Fort Wayne operation a couple of weeks after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company said in a statement yesterday that it would immediately stop all scheduled network air and ground operations. It cited a significant drop in demand for air and ground shipments.   Full Story

Interactive Intelligence profit falls
Business communications company Interactive Intelligence Inc. said yesterday its third-quarter profit fell on higher costs and reduced tax benefit but still beat Wall Street expectations. The company earned $2.5 million, or 13 cents per share, down from $6.7 million, or 36 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.   Full Story

Indianapolis firm plans to shoot "500" movie
An Indianapolis filmmaking company is preparing to start work on a movie about the first Indianapolis 500, which took place in 1911. My First Bike Productions Director Justin Escue, who graduated from Ball State University and worked in the filmmaking hotbed of Austin, Texas, has lured screenwriter Angelo Pizzo, who wrote "Hoosiers" and "Rudy," to help with the project, according to The Tribune-Star of Terre Haute.   Full Story

Survey: Small businesses losing confidence
Confidence among managers of businesses with less than $5 million in sales is waning in both Indianapolis and the state as a whole, according to a survey by National City. The Cleveland-based bank found that confidence slipped in September and October in the Indianapolis area, and for a couple of months prior when the entire state is taken into consideration.   Full Story

Who will be Lord of the rings?
At noon today, Colts owner Jim Irsay announced the team will give away five authentic Super Bowl rings in a unique three-part contest culminating at the Colts home game Dec. 2. It marks the first time in National Football League history a team has given away Super Bowl rings to fans. Sports memorabilia experts said Super Bowl rings are valued at about $15,000 each.   Full Story

Metro police investigate stabbing death
Indianapolis Metro police are looking for the person who killed a woman who worked at Methodist Hospital. Police discovered Jane Pepper's body yesterday afternoon in her basement apartment at Wellington Square in Broad Ripple. They found she'd been stabbed multiple times. Officers say no one reported hearing commotion from Pepper's apartment. Fox 59 will have more at 10 p.m.

Indianapolis high schools rank high for dropouts
Indiana has 10 high schools where so many students leave before their senior year the schools are nicknamed dropout factories in a national analysis by John Hopkins University. Researchers found 1,700 regular or vocational high school across the nation where 60 percent or less of the students who start school make it to their senior year. Arlington, Arsenal Tech, Broad Ripple, Manual, Northwest and Perry Meridian high schools are on the list.

City-County Council votes to investigate its president
The Indianapolis City-County Council voted last night to investigate its president, Monroe Gray. His conduct came under fire when an investigation revealed that he held two overlapping city jobs. A non-partisan investigative committee will be formed. Committee members will be able to subpoena witnesses and documents.

Colts vs. Patriots tickets going for $5,000-plus
If you want a ticket to Sunday's Colts-Patriots game, you'll pay dearly. Club seating at the RCA Dome is going for as much as $5,500 from scalpers and online brokers. The cheapest seats on the StubHub.com reseller site are selling for over $167.
