Pacers go man-to-fan with campaign
The Indiana Pacers have rolled out yet another marketing campaign featuring new coach Jim O'Brien-this time using a tactic the team has never tried before. In the days leading up to the Oct. 31 home opener, O'Brien will record a personal phone message inviting certain loyal fans and previous season ticket holders to the game. His message also will include information on purchasing tickets.   Full Story

Report: Real estate trusts poised for a fall

Real estate investment trust stocks could drop as much as 20 percent in coming 12 months, according to a Bloomberg report. The stocks, which been among the strongest performers through most of the decade, are likely to slump because higher borrowing costs will cool takeovers and cut property values, the news agency reported. Indianapolis is home to several REITS, including Simon Property Group Inc. Duke Realty Corp. and Kite Realty Group Trust.   Full Story

Sabatine to lead BSU's economic outreach
Ball State University has created a position to oversee its Building Better Communities economic-development outreach efforts. Frank Sabatine, dean of the School of Extended Education, has been appointed to the new position of associate vice president of economic development and community engagement. Before joining Ball State, Sabatine was liaison to the Community College of Indiana under former Gov. Frank O'Bannon. He also directed business development at former Indiana Department of Commerce.

St. Louis firm opens Indy design office
Barry-Wehmiller Design Group Inc., a St. Louis company focusing on manufacturing automation and engineering consulting, has opened an engineering consulting office in Indianapolis. The location, the 10th for Barry-Wehmiller, will serve Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky, and will be staffed with 30 professionals. The region had been served from its offices in Chicago, St. Louis and Greenville, S.C.

Brazil propels Dow AgroSciences sales
Economic recovery in Brazil helped drive third-quarter sales for Indianapolis-based Dow AgroSciences to $788 million, a 19-percent increase from the same period last year. Its parent company, Midland, Mich.-based Dow Chemical Co. Inc., reported results yesterday. In Brazil, more sugar cane acres and a good season for growing corn sparked strong demand for Dow AgroSciences' commodity herbicides.   Full Story

Nappannee firms face decision to rebuild
Some businesses in the northern Indiana town of Nappannee are uncertain whether they'll rebuild or fold after a tornado did an estimated $10 million in damage. Lawn and garden store Marty & Ted Inc. has remained open this week despite significant storm damage. The 160-mph winds from the Oct. 18 storm blew out showroom windows and tore the roof off half of the showroom and most of the workshop. But brothers and co-owners Dale, Gene and Lonnie Blucker are unsure of their next step, which depends on how much their insurance company pays for reconstruction or moving.   Full Story

Plainfield woman charged with murder
A recent graduate of Plainfield High School appeared in court this morning to face charges of murder, concealing a birth and tampering with physical evidence. Louisville police say Kathryn McCoy, 19, gave birth Oct. 24 in her Bellarmine University dorm bathroom. Officers say she let the baby die in the toilet and tried to hide the infant's body in a trash bin. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.


Administrators detail IPS school closings
IPS officials say they plan to close Hendricks, Stowe, Leach and Tarkington elementary schools. Several middle schools, including Manor, Longfellow, McFarland and Sidener, also may shut their doors. Details of the plans were unveiled yesterday at the first of three public forums. The next is scheduled on Oct. 30 at Arlington High School at 7 p.m.

New round of toy recalls announced
Health officials say 665,000 toys manufactured in China are being pulled off the shelves because of lead poisoning. The recall includes 38,000 Mattel "Go Diego Go!" Animal Rescue Boats. Other toys affected include football bobble-head cake decorations, Halloween pails, "Shrek the Third" and "Spider-Man 3" flashing rings, children's jewelry and gardening tools.
