| Composites could revolutionize RV industry The end might have begun for recreational vehicles made from traditional plywood. Companies developing lightweight composites predict that within a decade the new materials will upend the way RVs are made and cause sales to explode. The anticipated changes will revitalize an industry now beleaguered by rising gas prices and an economy mired in slow growth, its supporters claim. "This will change the landscape for the RV market forever," said Dave Hoefer, who owns an RV maker in the northern Indiana town of Middlebury.
Steak n Shake stock slides after earnings report Shares of Steak n Shake Co. tumbled this morning after the Indianapolis company reported late yesterday that same-store sales in its fiscal second quarter declined 6.3 percent. The stock fell 10.6 percent, to $6.81. It was the 11th consecutive quarter in which the diner chain reported falling same-store sales. | | | | |
| | New Terre Haute call center to hire 600 A call center operator announced today that it will add a location in Terre Haute and hire 600 workers before 2009. Alorica Inc., headquartered in Chino, Calif., will occupy 50,000 square feet in Plaza North Shopping Center, 1800 Fort Harrison Road, on Terre Haute's north side, according to the Indiana Economic Development Corp. The space had been used for retail. Alorica has 7,500 workers at 13 locations in the United States and the Philippines.
Bloomington firm lands $35M in venture capital Bloomington-based ProCure Treatment Centers Inc. said yesterday that it has received another infusion of $35 million in venture capital. Oklahoma City-based McClendon Venture Company LLC made the investment to help ProCure develop a network of cancer treatment centers across the country. McClendon also gave $35 million to ProCure in December 2006.
Dental technology firm adding 50 jobs Therametric Technologies Inc., an Indianapolis company that develops technology to find and prevent dental cavities in people and animals, plans to create 50 jobs this fall as it launches a product, according to the Indiana Economic Development Corp. The handheld probe uses light fluorescence to analyze minerals in tooth enamel. Software shows potential decay as many as two years before it happens. Led by former Indiana University researcher Dr. George Stookey, Therametric is headquartered in the Indiana University Emerging Technologies Center on the downtown canal.
Lilly exec to run Pfizer oncology business unit Pfizer Inc. late yesterday said that it named Eli Lilly and Co. executive Garry A. Nicholson to head the drug maker's new oncology business unit. Nicholson was global oncology platform leader at Lilly. He also was executive director of Lilly's U.S. oncology business unit for more than 10 years.
Gas prices to heat up this winter, Vectren says Natural gas prices will increase as much as 30 percent next winter over past winter, according to the Evansville Courier & Press, citing Vectren Corp. CEO Niel Ellerbrook. Prices are rising because customers have been seeking an alternative to utilities that use coal, which causes more pollution, Ellerbrook told investors at an annual meeting. The Evansville-based utility serves most of central Indiana outside of Indianapolis. Greensburg will hire firefighters for Honda plant Greensburg will hire six additional firefighters to cover the new Honda plant - at the company's expense. Honda Motor Corp. will compensate the city between Indianapolis and Cincinnati for the cost of providing around-the-clock protection to the plant, said Andrew Stoner, director of corporate affairs for the company. | | | |

| Fallen officers honored Today is National Peace Officers Memorial Day. In Indianapolis, a memorial service for fallen soldiers will honor seven officers killed last year. The ceremony will take place at the Law Enforcement and Firefighter's Memorial downtown. FOX 59 will have more at 10 p.m.
Woman hurt in Beech Grove crash A woman is in critical condition after an accident early this morning at Emerson Avenue and Albany Street in Beech Grove. Officials say the woman drove off the road into a light pole, then was thrown from the vehicle. She was taken to Methodist Hospital with internal injuries. Police suspect alcohol was a factor.
Castleton carjacker sentenced today A man convicted of a Castleton carjacking is expected to be sentenced later today. Earlier this month, Jeffery Burger, 45, pleaded guilty to felony carjacking. He kidnapped Cidney Smith in August while she got into her car near Castleton Square Mall. Smith secretly dialed 911, then jumped from the vehicle as Burger drove toward an interstate. Police caught up with Burger 11 days later, on Aug. 21. He was still driving Smith's car.
Zotec grows into coast-to-coast firm Through a string of acquisitions, Zotec Partners LLC has built itself into a physician-billing service with national reach. The Carmel company now employs 650 from California to Texas to Indiana and, soon, to Florida. More than 150 people are at its headquarters. CEO Scott Law contends the company isn't just larger; it's also a tougher competitor. The company signed new contracts worth $9 million annually last year. And this year it has signed new contracts worth another $13 million annually.
