"The Fantastics"
May 27-June 22
Indiana Repertory Theatre
One of the benefits of a co-production with another city's arts company is that we get to show off our local talent elsewhere. In this case, three of the strongest Indiana-based actors got to impress audiences in Syracuse, N.Y., before bringing this production of "The Fantastics" home to Indy.

The actors I'm referring to are Chuck Goad (best known here as the IRT's Scrooge and also to be seen this summer in Heartland Actors Repertory Theatre's "The Merchant of Venice"), Mark Goetzinger (a vet of more than 70 IRT productions, most recently "Our Town") and Robert Johansen (of ShadowApe Theatre Company note). They make it here. And they could make it anywhere.

As for "The Fantastics," the show offers a wealth of opportunity for either magic or hokum. I'm optimistic that we'll be seeing more of the former when it's staged at the IRT (which rarely takes a shot at a musical). For more details, visit www.irtlive.org.

Sandi Patty/Young Voices
May 22
St. Luke's Methodist Church
Now that Sandi Patty has been a fixture at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's Yuletide Celebration, it's easy to forget that the Indiana-rooted gospel star has a year-round career.

Well, she does. And for this concert, Patty joins on-the-rise children's choir Young Voices of Indiana in a benefit for the Julian Center. A chamber orchestra of local pros fills out the sound.

Patty-watchers also should note that her latest album "Songs for the Journey" dropped last month. It's a collection that ranges from traditional gospel tunes ("Joyful, Joyful") to Broadway (a cover of the "Wicked" ballad "For Good").

"Animation"
May 24-Jan. 4
Children's Museum of Indianapolis
I'll admit that I'm not a big fan of The Cartoon Network - at least, not before Adult Swim kicks in at 11. The kid-targeted shows ("Dexter's Laboratory," "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" et al) all seem to be ultra clever but also operating at a hyper level that makes me feel like an old, old man.

I fully realize that channel's line-up - and this exhibition - isn't designed for me. Still, I'm hoping that the Children's Museum's latest temporary exhibition allows for some slowdown time to learn more than just what the heck the deal is with "Cow and Chicken."

It promises to explore the math and sciences - not just the art - of animation. So here's hoping. For more details, click here.

Stone Temple Pilots
May 23
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
As any concertgoer knows, tickets to big-name acts aren't cheap these days.

Well, most of them, anyway. In the case of this year's Carb Day concert by Stone Temple Pilots, a ticket will only set you back $10 - and it includes access to, well, Carb Day at the track. Which means IndyCar practice, the Firestone Freedom 100, the Pit Stop Challenge and (oh, I almost forget, this is an A&E e-mail) country singer Lisa Dames singing the National Anthem

Robert Earl Keen
May 23
The Music Mill
I trumpeted the arrival of Robert Earl Keen the last time he played The Music Mill and that concert lived up to my expectations, offering a great selection of songs from the Austin, Texas, musician's musician.

Keen, in case you haven't yet been exposed, is adept at everything from moving ballads (his "Mariano" is a classic), to hard-driving country boy rock ("The Road Goes on Forever") to the novelty song ("Merry Christmas from the Family," which you may have heard on "The Bob and Tom Show").

Fans note: Look for "Live is Good," a double-disc concert of REK music by fellow musicians recorded in Austin in January. It's due for release this fall.

This week's contest
This week, win a four-pack of tickets to the Mid-Century Modern Home Tour on May 31. The tour includes five '50s and '60s homes on the north side. Just fill out the form here. We'll pull one name at random next week.

Oh, and while filling out the entry form, tell us your favorite thing from the mid-20th century.

Last week, we offered a four-pack of tickets to Conner Prairie's Indiana Festival June 7-8. The winner? Bethany Yonker. Go Bethany. We also asked entrants to offer up a random fact about Indiana. Some of our favorite responses are here.

And don't forget to visit Lou Harry's A&E blog here.
