Our Dad in Atlantis"/"Papa esta en la Atlantida"
May 8-June 8
Phoenix Theatre
Make sure you call ahead before catching this show at the Phoenix Theatre. Pick the wrong day and you could be in for a cultural experience you probably hadn't expected.

That's because, for select performances toward the end of the month, the Phoenix is presenting Javier Malpica's play in Spanish. The rest of the time, it will be offered in English.

In any language, the play concerns kids living with their grandmother in Mexico after their father has left for the U.S. For details, click here.

Jeff Hamilton Trio
May 11
University of Indianapolis
Ideally, when an Indiana native son plays a concert here, you don't have to use his roots as an excuse to see him play. No need to give him or her extra leeway because you share native soil.

That's the case here, where Jeff Hamilton's Richmond birth and Indiana University education are just gravy.

The real reason to see him is the fact that he's an acclaimed drummer who has graced recordings by Michael Buble, Queen Latifah, Diane Krall, Barbra Streisand, Rosemary Clooney, Wynton Marsalis, Diane Schurr, Frank Sinatra and many others.

His own discs, with the Jeff Hamilton Trio and the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra - as well as his live performances - have built his reputation even further.

The Denver Post said he "brought the crowd to its feet with his amazing hand-drumming, soft and understated yet as riveting and rewarding as any drum solo you've heard. "

Hamilton's homecoming, of sorts, will happen at University of Indianapolis, where he'll be performing with his trio. For details, click here.

Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra
May 10
Indiana History Center
The first star of this season-closer for the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra is Franz Joseph Haydn, whose "Symphony No. 102 in B-Flat Major" will be paired with Brahm's "Variation on a Theme of Haydn" (proving that sampling was popular even back in the day).

The second star is twice-Grammy-nominated violinist Philippe Quint.

Of course, that's not to downplay the ICO itself - 35 players led by long-time maestro Kirk Trevor - who have been flavoring the Indianapolis music scene since 1984.

For details, click here.

"Allotropy"
May 9-10
1315 S. Shelby St .
An allotrope is an element existing in two different forms. As for "Allotropy," well, expect art in lots of different forms at the ninth installment of this event. You should know going in that the artwork here has been juried: Of the 48 entrants, 20 were selected to be featured.

You should know that the music ranges from Sarah Grain and her bosa-nova-infused folk to Creepin' Charlie & the Boneyard Orchestra.

You also should know that it's all contained in what's described as a "disused space" in Fountain Square.

Finally, be aware that the folks behind the show are the creative minds of Primary Colours. For more details, click here.
"bare" benefit
May 13
American Cabaret Theatre
In July, upstart company All Alike Productions will be staging the local premiere of the pop opera "bare." I expect to be writing more about that when its production gets closer.

For now, though, let's talk about Tuesday's fund-raiser for the show. Labeled "A Pianoke Fun Raising Gala," the event includes hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer and, what's relevant here, the chance not only to hear some strong local vocal talent, but also to sing along.

Think karaoke, but instead of recorded music you get live accompaniment. The credentialed performers involved, including Scot Greenwell and Claire Wilcher, see this as an opportunity to perform songs from shows they'd never get cast in, so expect things to get lively.

A $15 minimum suggested donation gets you food, the show, and the chance to, temporarily, be a star. For more details, click here.

"Charity by Numbers"
Through May 31
Domont Studio Gallery
Yes, I told you about this event last week, but I failed to tell you that the exhibition runs through the end of the month. So I'll tell you about it again. The exhibition, proceeds from which benefit the Damien Center, features the work of a long list of notable Indy-area artists who used a paint-by-numbers kit as the starting point for their work.

For details, click here.

This Week's Contest
This week, two winners will each claim a pair of tickets to the 38th Broad Ripple Art Fair and a BRAF T-shirt. The Fair runs May 17-18 on the grounds of the Indianapolis Art Center. Just fill out the form here. We'll pull one name at random next week.

If you don't win, by the way, you can still buy advance tickets at the Art Center, Fifth Third Bank, or your local Marsh. (For more information on the Fair, click here).

Oh, and while filling out the entry form, tell us your favorite piece of outdoor art.

Last week, we offered a table at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre's production of "Peter Pan." The winner? Christy Stanley. We asked entrants to name their favorite flying person or thing. Some of our favorite responses are here.

And don't forget to visit Lou Harry's A&E blog here.
