"Tales of Hoffman"
May 2, 4
Clowes Memorial Hall
Random thoughts on "Tales of the Hoffman," the latest production by Indianapolis Opera:

1. Some ideas don't go away. The epic quest, for example. Or the comedy of mistaken identity. And, of course, the love story between a man and a giant doll. Yes, the device familiar to many from the schlocky "Mannequin" and the much-better "Lars and the Real Girl" also was featured in one of the stories in this three-taled opera.

2. If you go see Indianapolis Opera's production, you'll be one up on its composer, Jacques Offenbach. He died before its world premiere.

3. If you are a newcomer to opera and aren't convinced you want to drop the coin on full-price tickets, check out the two-for-one deal here.

"Comic Book Heroes"
Opening May 3
Children's Museum of Indianapolis
Perhaps you are still mourning the loss of downtown's Super Hero Museum. Or perhaps you didn't even know that that short-lived attraction ever existed. Whatever the case, there's plenty of super memorabilia on display at "Comic Book Heroes Featuring the Max Simon Comic Book Collection."

But this being the Children's Museum, the exhibition isn't all look-but-don't-touch. There will also be interactive areas for kids to create their own superselves. For details, click here.

"Book Marks ... an Evening of Words and Wine"
May 3
Ritz Charles
One authored an Oprah Book Club pick. Another scored a Pulitzer. The third scored the World Fantasy Award four times (at last count). The fourth may not have as full an awards mantel, but she has written a trio of acclaimed novels. They - Elizabeth Berg, William Dietrich, Jeffrey Ford and Mameve Medwed - are the quartet that are showcased at this inaugural fund-raising event for the Carmel Clay Public Library. "Charity by Numbers"
April 25-26
Domont Studio Gallery
I used to believe my grandfather was a wonderful artist. Then I realized that his work was all from paint-by-numbers kits. Then the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History ran an exhibition of paint-by-numbers art. After that, I didn't know what to believe.

I expect to be even more confused after this exhibition, in which a long list of notable local artists - including Phil Campbell, James Wille Faust, Becky Fehsenfeld and Kyle Ragsdale - use an actual paint-by-numbers kit as starting points.

Proceeds from the sale of the art benefit the Damian Center. For details, click here.
This week's contest
This week, win a table for four at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre's production of "Peter Pan ." To be part of this May 24 trip to Neverland, just fill out the form here. We'll pull one name at random next week.

Oh, and while filling out the entry form, tell us your favorite flying person or thing.

Last week, we offered a pair of tickets to see Buckwheat Zydeco on June 2 at the Music Mill. The winner? Peter Howe. We asked entrants to name their favorite person whose name is also a food.

Some of our favorites are here.

And don't forget to visit Lou Harry's A&E blog here.
