NFL owners lobby in advance of big vote
The streets of Atlanta's Buckhead district were quiet late last night, but the atmosphere inside the Ritz-Carlton was like a New Year's Eve party. The 32 NFL team owners met and mingled mostly behind closed doors, but the entourages spilled into the lobby and bar area as officials from Indianapolis, Houston and Phoenix made their final lobbying efforts to land the Super Bowl in 2012. Owners are expected to pick the winning city this afternoon.   Full Story

International Truck to lay off hundreds
International Truck and Engine Corp. plans to temporarily lay off hundreds of workers next week at its east-side engine plant, citing slumping demand for Ford trucks. "It's all driven by Ford demand, or lack thereof," said Roy Wiley, spokesman for the Warrenville, Ill.-based engine maker. "High diesel fuel prices, the housing market - you name it." Laid-off workers will return the week of June 23, prior to a regularly scheduled three-week summer shutdown that starts June 30.   Full Story

Browning planning 4-star hotel in Evansville
Browning Investments, the Indianapolis developer whose projects include the NCAA headquarters downtown, is considering building a four-star hotel in downtown Evansville near the Aztar Casino and a possible new arena pushed by some Evansville boosters. Browning said a new arena and other attractions would lure convention traffic, and that Evansville has too little in the way of modern hotels that corporate travelers want, according to the Evansville Courier & Press. Evansville officials are studying whether to replace Roberts Municipal Stadium, which hosts concerts and other events. A consulting group has suggested a 10,000-seat venue costing about $92 million.

Fitch affirms ratings, outlook on Wellpoint

Fitch Ratings affirmed its negative outlook on health insurer WellPoint Inc. yesterday following lackluster first-quarter results and weaker 2008 expectations. Fitch also affirmed its investment-grade ratings. "Primary drivers of weaker operating performance in 2008 include higher-than-expected medical cost trends, lower-than-expected fully insured enrollment, and the effects of weakening economic conditions," Fitch said.   Full Story

Contract buyouts could cost Zimmer $250M
Warsaw-based Zimmer Holdings Inc. might pay as much as $250 million to terminate royalty contracts it has with hundreds of health care consultants, reports The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne. The change follows a settlement reached last year with federal authorities who said several orthopedic companies paid surgeons excessive amounts to be consultants or to use their products exclusively. Zimmer paid nearly $170 million to settle the charges but admitted to no wrongdoing.

3 groups appeal state permit for BP oil refinery

Three environmental groups are trying to stop BP from continuing its expansion of an oil refinery along Lake Michigan, contending in an appeal to the state yesterday that an air permit granted to the company was improperly granted. The Natural Resources Defense Council filed the appeal with the Indiana Office of Environmental Adjudication on behalf of the Save the Dunes Council, the Sierra Club's Hoosier chapter, the Hoosier Environmental Council and two Lake County residents. The groups argue that the state Department of Environmental Management made numerous factual and legal errors in granting the permit.
