Larry Bird suing over improper use of his name
Larry Bird is suing a French Lick couple in federal court over the use of his name in connection with a bed and breakfast they are operating in the Hoosier icon's boyhood home. The lawsuit, filed May 12 in the New Albany division of the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Indiana, demands that the Legend of French Lick LLC stop using his name.   Full Story

ICVA, cultural commission launch ad blitz
The Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association and the Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission have launched an in-state ad campaign promoting local tourism. The 10-second spots promoting travel close to home will also run in the Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis markets.  Full Story
Speedway names first female town manager
The Speedway Town Council has named Barbara Lawrence the new town manager for Speedway. Most recently, Lawrence served as executive director of the Indianapolis Bond Bank. She was also an aide to former Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson and was head of the city's Department of Public Works. In her new role, Lawrence will oversee daily operations and management of Speedway and guide its long-range planning. She will be paid $97,500.

Pfizer to close Terre Haute plant
Drug maker Pfizer Inc. will close its sterile manufacturing plant in Terre Haute by the middle of next year. The company says the closure will eliminate the remaining 140 jobs at the plant. The company laid off 660 in January and warned at the time that the remaining jobs could be cut.   Full Story

Marketing firm to expand in Zionsville
Just Marketing International plans to spend more than $3 million to expand its Zionsville headquarters. The motorsports marketing company said the expansion will create 47 jobs that pay up to $28 an hour. Just Marketing employs 90. The company will receive up to $350,000 in tax credits and training grants, as well as a possible tax abatement from the town of Zionsville.

Analyst: REIT shares overvalued
An analyst said yesterday that real estate investment trust stocks might be overpriced, especially as property fundamentals weaken amid a soft economy.  Full Story

Drug deal results in murder
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said a botched drug deal turned into a robbery this morning, leaving one man dead. A man shot downtown was driven to an apartment complex in the 2100 block of Shelburne Drive by a female companion, Matonya Johnson of Indianapolis. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10.


The koalas are coming
The Indianapolis Zoo is awaiting two new arrivals this afternoon. A pair of koalas, on-loan from the San Diego Zoo, will spend the summer here. The two male marsupials are part of the zoo's summer blockbuster koala exhibit running from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The exhibit will feature other Australian animals as well, including bearded dragons, a spotted python and a carpet python.

One person dies in late night crash
One person is dead and two others are in the hospital after a head-on crash last night at the intersection of Madison Avenue and East Street. Officials say a man driving an SUV ran a red light and hit a van. A passenger in the SUV died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was taken to Wishard Hospital in stable condition. The driver of the van also is in the hospital.
