Nick Cave
May 29
Indianapolis Museum of Art
Nick Cave is an Australian singer/songwriter and buddy of Russell Crowe. This is NOT that Nick Cave.

This is the Nick Cave who chairs the Department of Fashion and Design at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. His appearance fits in with the closing week of the "Breaking the Mode" exhibition because his work breaks all kinds of modes.

In Cave's world, fashion absorbs and repackages the world. His "Soundsuit" full-body sculptures incorporate not just beads, sequins and other traditional adornments, but also ceramic birds, metal trees and flowers and whatever else catches Cave's eye.

He'll be visiting the Indianapolis Museum of Art to discuss his work, screen some videos and discuss fashion as art. For more details, click here

Sheryl Crow
June 2
Lawn at White River State Park
I still keep running into people who say they haven't yet been to the Lawn at White River State Park. Even though the 2007 summer season doubled the audience size of 2006, the Lawn still raises questions as to where it is, where to park, the seating format, etc.

So, rather than tell you all about Sheryl Crow, who kicks off the Lawn's season, I'll take this space to tell you that the season includes concerts by Death Cab for Cutie, Umphrey's McGee, Weird Al Yankovic, Wilco, Boys Like Girls, and O.A.R. Plus a free concert from ex-Monkee Davy Jones.

There's the same parking lot you'd use for other White River State Park attractions. Or you can just park on any downtown street and walk.

And like a shrunken version of Verizon Wireless Music Center, there's a central reserved section surrounded by a lawn. You can find a seating chart here.

For more details on the Crow concert, click here.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
May 31
Little Nashville Opry, Nashville
Since 1995, just about anyone who is anybody in country music—OK, just about anybody who is anybody in country music whose popularity peaked more than 15 years ago—has played the Little Nashville Opry.

That's not meant as an insult to the artists: Audiences are fickle creatures, and just because you aren't topping charts and pleasing radio programmers today doesn't mean you still don't have the goods.

Upcoming concerts here include the Bellamy Brothers on June 7, the Oak Ridge Boys on June 14, and George Jones on Sept. 28.

I thought I'd push you toward the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, which was just added to the Music City Walk of Fame (along with Indiana native Steve Wariner). Known for bluegrass, they charted on the pop side with "Mr. Bojangles" and served, without much credit, as Steve Martin's musicians on his "King Tut" novelty hit.

While transitions are expecting in long-lived bands, NGDB still is comprised of two original and two long-term members. (Jackson Browne, one of the originals, has, of course, gone on to solo.)

Mid-East Classic Yo-yo Contest
May 31
Eiteljorg Museum
Let's forget about the "contest" part of this affair and, instead, put yo-yo in the category of skill-based performance art that includes juggling, plate-spinning, and balancing heavy, awkward things in places that shouldn't by any rights be able to balance heavy, awkward things.

Looking at it that way—and considering that 50 world-class yo-yoists will be on hand—makes this a one-of-a-kind event worth checking out. Competition goes on all day, but if your time (or interest) is limited, consider the freestyle contest between 12:30 and 3:30. For more details, click here.

Eric Clapton
May 30
Verizon Wireless Music Center
Eric Clapton, the musician, hits the stage at about the same time that "Clapton," the autobiography, hits stores in paperback. Is that too obvious of a book to be reading while you wait on the lawn for the show to start?

For more details on the book, click here. For more on the concert, click here.

This week's contest
This week, win a pair of tickets to see Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre's June 13-14 presentation of "Hooray for Bollywood," a celebration of the film musicals of India. Just fill out the form here. We'll pull one name at random next week.

For more information on the production, click here.

Oh, and while filling out the entry form, fill in this blank: "Hooray for _____________" (Anything you want to cheer for will do.)

Last week, we offered a four-pack of tickets to the Mid-Century Modern Home Tour. The winner? Andy Waggoner. We also asked entrants to tell us their favorite thing from the mid-20th century. Some of our favorite responses are here.

And don't forget to visit Lou Harry's A&E blog here.
