Patrick and Castroneves will be among the favorites to win the Indianapolis 500 on May 25. Win or lose, they eventually could follow the last two Indy 500 winners, Sam Hornish Jr. and Dario Franchitti, to the riches and exposure of NASCAR. Can life sciences firms absorb Roche layoffs?
First Lilly, now Roche. Indianapolis' major life sciences companies are shedding jobs to try to hold down costs, dealing a major blow to central Indiana's major industry. Roche Diagnostics announced Monday it would trim 300 people from its research and development area by 2011. In March, Eli Lilly and Co. said it would use voluntary buyouts to cut 500 manufacturing and R&D jobs by this summer. But at least one hiring and recruiting specialist thinks the diet by the big boys could turn out to be a feast of talent for the little guys. "I do think Indiana's going to come out on top of this. We're going to be able to put several new companies on the map moving forward," said Daniel Friedman, director of sales and marketing at Kingsley Rose, a recruitment firm started by local tech entrepreneur Joe Huffine.
