Bright House close to deal with Big Ten Network
Officials for local cable television provider Bright House Networks said they expect to finalize a deal later this week to carry Big Ten Network programming. A deal would make Big Ten sports programs available to 120,000 households in central Indiana that don't have access to the network. Comcast, the other major cable provider in the Indianapolis area, reached a deal earlier this summer to carry the Big Ten Network, which launched last year.   Full Story

Sonic making renewed push into Indy area
A Sonic Corp. franchisee plans to plunk five to seven of the drive-in restaurants in the Indianapolis area in the next five years. Todd Fugate, who lives in Overland Park, Kan., and owns Evansville-based Drive-In of Evansville Inc., has started construction on the first restaurant, in Avon at Rockville and Raceway roads. This isn't Sonic's first stab at the Indianapolis market. Several drive-ins operating under the Sonic name closed here a few years ago.   Full Story

Indy Star guild claims layoffs violated contract
Layoffs announced last week by The Indianapolis Star violated a contract with the Indianapolis Newspaper Guild, the guild alleged in a grievance filed yesterday. Guild officials believe Editor Dennis Ryerson moved to protect reporters and photographers, none of which lost their jobs. "On one hand I respect what Dennis did, but the contract doesn't say he can do that," said guild President Abe Aamidor, a Star reporter.   Full Story

Bankrupt firm might close Elkhart operations
Atlantis Plastics Inc., an Atlanta-based plastics manufacturer that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Aug. 10, has notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development that it might close three plants in the Elkhart area. The plants have been put up for sale as part of Atlantis' attempt to solve its financial problems. Atlantis shares are trading at 10 cents.   Full Story

RV maker changes closing decision on plant
Recreational vehicle maker Monaco Coach Corp. has decided to keep its chassis-building operation open in Elkhart. The company announced last month it was closing three factories in northern Indiana's Elkhart County, eliminating 1,400 jobs, or about a third of its work force. But Monaco announced yesterday that its joint venture with Navistar International Corp. will continue production at the Elkhart plant.   Full Story

MasterBrand closes 275-worker Richmond plant

MasterBrand Cabinets Inc. is cutting about 275 jobs as it stops manufacturing at its Richmond plant, effective immediately. The Jasper-based cabinet maker said that it tried to adjust production schedules, but could not keep the plant in operation because of "marketplace conditions."   Full Story

Panel to study contentious immigration issue
State lawmakers charged with studying illegal immigration this summer are hoping to collect facts - not political grandstanding or heated rhetoric - during meetings next month. The summer study committee on immigration issues has scheduled Statehouse meetings Sept. 9 and Sept. 16. "We want to find out how many illegal aliens are in our state right now, where they live and what they are doing to earn a living," said Rep. Scott Pelath, a Democrat from Michigan City who is co-chairing the committee.   Full Story

Colts ready to let Peyton practice
Peyton Manning could be back on the practice field as early as today. The Colts are ready to take #18 off the "physically unable to perform" list. But Coach Tony Dungy says Manning probably won't play in the team's final pre-season game Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Dungy says the team plans to ease the all-star quarterback into his workout schedule. Fox 59 will have more at 10 p.m.
Police call deadly hit-and-run a homicide
Indianapolis police say a deadly hit-and-run on the near north side last night might have been intentional. Officers were called to 40th Street near Graceland Avenue north of Crown Hill Cemetery after witnesses saw a man hanging onto the hood of a speeding car and hitting the windshield with a hammer. They say the driver threw him off by coming to a sudden stop. The victim, Robert McClurg, 49, suffered severe head trauma and later was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital.

Former school treasurer charged with theft
A former Clinton Central school district treasurer has been accused of taking more than $13,000 from the district located between Indianapolis and Lafayette. Mary Clark, 41, of Michigantown, was arraigned yesterday on charges of forgery and fraud. Investigators believe Clark wrote payroll checks in the name of her son, who is a substitute teacher, and wrote overtime checks for herself. Superintendent Phil Boley says Clark was fired in December following an investigation by the State Board of Accounts.

Deputy Constable held at gunpoint
A teen-ager tried to rob Perry Township Deputy Constable Kenneth Evans early this morning, Indianapolis police say. The incident happened at 3450 N. Meridian St. near the Indiana Blood Center. Evans told police the teen tried to rob him at gun point, then looked startled and took off. The suspect was last seen running south on Illinois Street.
