Outage hammers Anderson startup
1Num Technologies Inc., a startup company that provides telephone services, is still struggling to restore service that was lost Thursday. In an e-mail to customers on Friday, the Anderson company blamed its vendor, Colorado-based Level 3 Communications Inc., for "arbitrarily" stopping service to its customers' telephone numbers. Not only are 1Num customers without service, but 1Num customer service numbers don't function.   Full Story

Dealer Services moving to new headquarters
One of the nation's largest inventory financing companies for independent car dealers, Dealer Services Corp., will move a mile up the road to larger headquarters in Carmel. Dealer Services will occupy 26,000 square feet in Carmel City Center. The company said it has outgrown its 13,000-square-foot headquarters at Two Penn Mark Plaza, 11555 N. Meridian St.   Full Story


Republic throws life line to Frontier Airlines
Frontier Airways Holdings Inc., looking to emerge from bankruptcy protection, has been offered an alternative $75 million investment from three unsecured creditors. Indianapolis-based Republic Airways Holdings Inc., Credit Suisse Securities and Greenwich, Conn.-based AQR Capital are offering Frontier up to $75 million in debtor-in-possession financing, Frontier said yesterday. All are members of the unsecured creditors committee in Frontier's Ch. 11 bankruptcy cases.   Full Story

Celadon shares rise on good profit report
Stock in Celadon Group Inc. jumped more than 10 percent this morning after the Indianapolis-based long-haul trucking firm reported fiscal fourth quarter profit that surpassed expectations. The shares rose to $14.05, the highest since September last year. CEO Steve Russell said Celadon operations suggest the industry shakeout is well underway and that better times lie ahead.   Full Story

Struggling casinos lay off workers
The slow economy is prompting casinos to lay off employees in order to cut costs. Horseshoe Casino, the former Caesar's Indiana in the southern Indiana town of Elizabeth, has eliminated 14 positions, according to the Courier-Journal of Louisville. In East Chicago, the Ameristar Casino has laid off 41 workers as part of a larger layoff launched by Las Vegas-based Ameristar Casinos Inc., according to The Post-Tribune of Merrillville.   Full Story

Analyst cuts Conseco profit outlook
A Keefe, Bruyette & Woods analyst yesterday cut his profit estimates for Conseco Inc. to reflect a one-time charge the insurer expects to take in the second quarter. In a note to clients Friday, analyst Jukka Lipponen cut his second-quarter and full-year estimates by 5 cents each to reflect a roughly $15 million pretax charge the company said it will take related to the consolidation of offices.   Full Story

Indianapolis firefighter dies serving in Iraq
The Indianapolis Fire Department is mourning the death of 12-year veteran Gary Henry, who was killed by a road-side bomb in Iraq. Henry was a special operations rescue coordinator before his deployment. He was a sergeant with the Indiana National Guard's 38th Military Police Company, based in Danville. Fox 59 will have more at 10 p.m.

Charges against burglary suspect to be dropped
The Marion County Prosecutor's Office says charges against Nicholas Martin will be dismissed today. Martin was arrested during a police investigation into a burglary last month at Don's Guns. Officers say a group of teens smashed a stolen car into the west-side shop and stole several weapons. Investigators detected Martin's fingerprint on a glass case. Martin says he was in the store with his sister, who bought a gun the day before the burglary.
 
Mother of Wal-Mart toddler found
A mother accused of abandoning her son at a central Indiana Wal-Mart is behind bars. Metro police say they received a tip around 6 p.m. yesterday when someone spotted Julia Ornelas, 39, in Indianapolis. Officers say Ornela left her 3-year-old son in a Frankfort Wal-Mart on June 13. She will be processed and returned to Clinton County, where she faces charges for neglect of a dependent.

Neighbors gather for National Night Out
Tonight, neighborhoods across Indianapolis will come together for the 25th Annual National Night Out Against Crime as part of the city's Peace in the Streets: Stop the Violence campaign. Organizers say one of the best ways to deter criminal activity is to encourage neighbors to look out for each other. Residents will have a chance to mingle with neighbors and meet with police and other emergency responders. The event kicks off at noon with the Crime Fighter of the Year awards at City Market's Whistler Plaza.
