Turnaround may be in offing, observers say
Companies are quietly planning expansion projects despite woes that continue to unfold in housing, finance and other hard-hit industries, Indianapolis-area economic development officials say. The officials' experiences differ, but a couple of them contacted in a spot check say requests for information from expansion-minded companies are becoming more common, and another says activity hasn't fallen off significantly. That suggests companies foresee the economy turning around and want to be positioned to act on their plans when the timing seems right.   Full Story

Conseco's long-term care idea could set trend
Conseco Inc.'s decision to unload its troubled long-term health care policies could become a model for other companies, Indiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Atterholt says. That may be good news for investors. But Conseco CEO Jim Prieur says policyholders can "absolutely" expect further premium increases if they want to hold onto their coverage. On Monday, Carmel-based Conseco announced that it will transfer 142,000 long-term-care policies owned by its Conseco Senior Health Insurance Co. subsidiary to an independent trust. Conseco needs approval from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department because the subsidiary is based in Pennsylvania for regulatory purposes.
