Math bee might come to Indianapolis area
The mathematical version of the Scripps National Spelling Bee could be coming to Indianapolis, according to a spokesman for the organization that hosts the event. Based in Birmingham, Ala., the not-for-profit National Math Bee was founded by S. David Vaillancourt, who moved to the Indianapolis area recently. A Carmel office address is listed on the organization's Web site. Spokesman Derek Mathews said other business interests of Vaillancourt's brought him to Indiana, but that the math bee could follow.   Full Story

Housing bust hits some counties, prices harder
The squishy Indianapolis-area residential real estate market has come to this: The region hasn't been hit as hard as the nation as a whole. The strongest markets are for the least-expensive houses and houses in Hendricks County. Markets are weakest in Morgan County and for houses priced over $1 million. MIBOR President David Bickell said markets are digesting excesses from the housing bust.   Full Story

Publisher hit with $50,000 for software violations
Author Solutions has been fined $50,000 for using unauthorized copies of Adobe, Microsoft and Symantec software, the Business Software Alliance announced today. The Bloomington provider of self-publishing services was outed through a report to the alliance's hotline, the alliance said. Author Solutions President and CEO Kevin Weiss said the infringement happened under prior ownership.  Full Story

Cymbalta helps lower-back pain, Lilly says
Eli Lilly and Co. said its depression drug Cymbalta showed some effectiveness against chronic low back pain, according to data presented today in Spain. The study gives Lilly evidence to perhaps get Cymbalta approved to treat yet another medical condition. The drug already has approval to treat depression, generalized anxiety disorder, diabetic nerve pain and fibromyalgia.   Full Story

AG accuses Countrywide of deception
Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter has filed a lawsuit in Steuben County Court against Countrywide Home Loans Inc., alleging that the nation's largest mortgage lender engaged in deceptive practices that led borrowers to obtain costly and potentially risky loans. He joins attorneys general from four other states in taking action against Calabasas, Calif.-based Countrywide this year. Among other charges, Carter alleges that Countrywide provided financial incentive for employees and loan brokers to sell loans with potentially risky features.   Full Story

Court approves bid for Steve & Barry's
A U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge on Friday approved a $163 million acquisition of discount clothing chain Steve & Barry's, which has Indianapolis stores at Washington Square and Lafayette Square malls. BHY Holdings LLC, an affiliate of investment firms Bay Harbour Management and York Capital Management, said last week it had won a bid to buy Steve & Barry's. The acquisition is expected to be completed today.   Full Story

Toll-road workers reject unionization
The company that leases the Indiana Toll Road from the state said late last week that a vote involving 86 maintenance workers resulted in rejecting an organization attempt by the International Union of Operating Engineers and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. ITR Concession Co. LLC did not release vote totals. Meanwhile, the company is tussling with a different Teamsters local as the parties attempt to forge their first contract.   Full Story

Officer in court for rape charges
A former Indianapolis police officer appeared in court for an initial hearing this morning. Anthony Smith, 36, faces nine charges, including rape. In mid-August, a 19-year-old woman says then-patrolman Smith pressured her into having sex with him so she could avoid arrested on several traffic warrants. Smith claims the sex was consensual but later turned in his badge. He is the 10th Indianapolis officer charged or investigated this year. Fox 59 will have more at 10 p.m.
Indiana man to speak at Democratic convention
The Democratic National Convention kicks off from Denver tonight, and an Indiana railroad worker will have the chance to speak. Mike Fisher is an Amtrak machinist who recently hosted Sen. Barack Obama at his Beech Grove home for lunch. Fisher says Obama covers many of the issues he and his family face. The speech is expected to counter Republican portrayals of Obama as an out-of-touch celebrity. Former Indiana Rep. Lee Hamilton also is scheduled to speak tonight.

I-465 reopened after fatal crash
A deadly accident closed a portion of southbound Interstate 465 on the northeast side this morning. Investigators say a woman was speeding when she rear-ended a semi in a construction zone near the 56th Street exit. She then rear-ended a second semi, causing her car to roll several times. The woman, who wasn't wearing a seat-belt, was thrown from the car. Police aren't releasing her name pending notification of her family.

McCordsville welcomes home silver medalist
McCordsville residents gathered at Cathedral High School this morning to honor an Olympic gymnast Samantha Peszek, 16, who earned a silver in the team finals. The U.S. squad was a favorite heading into the semi-finals of the team all-around event. Peszek sprained her ankle during warm-ups, but her teammates managed to finish strong and advance to the final. There, they won the silver medal, finishing behind China.
