Peter Frampton
Aug. 29
Military Park
Yes, it was a long time ago. But it's nearly impossible to write about Peter Frampton without referencing "Frampton Comes Alive!" his 1976 double album that, at the time, was the best-selling live set ever (a couple of discs have since passed it). I can still remember opening up my Columbia Record and Tape Club initial offer package and finding it there, complete with its fold-open cover photo and 14-minute version of "Do You Feel Like We Do?"

Frampton is long gone from the pop charts, but he has maintained high respect from the music world for his virtuoso guitar playing. Last year brought him a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album and he performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in 2007. This year, he's back in Indy as part of the RibAmerica Festival.

Other headliners in this year's event include Dennis DeYoung and Cowboy Mouth (pre-fireworks on the 30th), Jonny Lang and Ted Nugent (on the 31st) and Blue Oyster Cult and.38 Special (on the 1st - how did it get to be September already?).

Maroon 5/Counting Crows
Aug. 28
Verizon Wireless Music Center
Biblically, Adam came first. But in this show, which Adam comes first depends on the venue.

Looks like, at Verizon, Adam Levine's Maroon 5 will come before Adam Duritz's Counting Crows. Which means the group on the blanket next to yours will be screaming out the choruses of "She Will Be Loved" and "This Love" before you scream out the choruses of "Mr. Jones" and "Accidentally in Love." Naturally Inspired Paint Out
Opening reception Aug. 28
Exhibit Aug. 29-Nov. 23
Indianapolis Zoo
Earlier this month, artists were invited to the Indianapolis Zoo for a day of painting. This week, their work will be introduced with a reception and silent auction benefiting the zoo. Those who submit winning bids will have to wait before taking the work home, though. The winning paintings will hang for the viewing pleasure of the general public (or, at least, the zoo-going public) in the Schaefer Rotunda of White River Gardens through Thanksgiving. IndyFringe
Through Aug. 31
Various locations on or near Mass Ave
Usually, in this e-mail, I take educated guesses on yet-to-be-opened events. But Labor Day weekend being a traditionally slow A&E time - and with so much Fringe activity going on - I thought I'd take the space and tell you about three above-average productions I've already seen at the fest.

"Clown At Work" is the ideal Fringe family show, with the charming Brent McCoy not just performing terrific stunts, but also getting the audience to care about the outcome. Final performances are Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 p.m.

If you're likely to be offended by a colorful play title, then stay away from "A**holes and Aureoles" (abbreviated to circumvent spam filters far and wide.) If, however, you want to see two very funny actresses in a what-could-possibly-happen-next series of short, shocking, hilarious plays, then this is the show for you. It is the only Fringe show I've seen so far that earned a thunderous and spontaneous standing ovation. Final shows are Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
In "Stinky Flowers and the Bad Banana" a third-grader (played by an adult) shares fanciful stories that lead to a very moving, unusual ending, making this the unexpected charmer of the Fest. Final shows are Thursday at 6 p.m. and Friday at 7:30 p.m.

This week's contest
Want to see the Indiana Repertory Theatre's season-opening production of "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure"? You can win four tickets by entering here. We'll draw one name at random. For more information on the show, click here.

Just to make things interesting, in the response box, tell us your favorite mystery. What you tell us won't help you win, but next week we'll offer a link to our favorite responses.

Last week, we offered a pair of tickets to the Indianapolis Art Center's Artsparkle benefit. The winner: John Capella. At that time, we asked you to name your favorite sparkly thing. Some interesting responses are here.

Make sure to visit www.ibj.com/arts for previews, reviews, blogs and video. And watch for the IBJ Arts & Entertainment Season Preview in the Sept. 1 Indianapolis Business Journal.
