PriorityListTitle

IndyFringe
Aug. 22-31
Various Mass Ave. locations

I suspect that no two people have the same IndyFringe experience. With 270 performances of 53 shows there are a huge number of possible permutations. You could play it conservatively and just go to the established companies. You could keep it minimal and stick with one-person shows. You could focus on comedy and magic. Or dance. Or shows with provocative titles. You can jump right in and take risks or you can wait until word-of-mouth builds for particular shows.

You can even bypass the whole idea of selecting shows in advance and, instead, just head down to Mass Ave. when you've got a few hours and see what's available.

However you do it, IndyFringe is designed for interaction. Sharing your thoughts with total strangers between shows makes the experience even more fun. For more information, click here.

Kathy Griffin
Aug. 23
Murat Theatre

Comedian Kathy Griffin has it both ways. As a self-proclaimed D-list celeb, she uses self-mockery to ease her sometimes brutal comments about those on better lists. On the other hand, how can you claim membership on the D-list when your TV show and special land you a pair of Emmy nominations?

Of course, none of this matters a whole lot when you are laughing. For more information, click here.

Bob Dylan
Aug. 23
Horseshoe Casino

The newly renamed Horseshoe Casino (formerly Caesars), continues a strong lineup of headline entertainment. This Saturday it's Bob Dylan. If that's too quick of a turnaround for you, consider Creedence Clearwater Revival on Sept. 14 or Jonny Lang on Sept. 20. For more information, click here.

"Night of the Hunter"
Aug. 21
Mass Ave. Video

It doesn't get as much attention as the film series at the Indianapolis Museum of Art or the one at the Indiana History Center, but the series put together by the Indianapolis International Film Festival at Mass Ave. Video is one of the best-scheduled. Here, the fest presents the Robert Mitchum classic that marks the first and last film directed by Charles Laughton. It's an odd mix of thriller and fairy tale featuring unforgettable imagery and compelling characters. Brace yourself for a one-of-a-kind ride. For more information, click here.

The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra
Aug. 22-23
Conner Prairie

Tommy Dorsey was, of course, one of the top big-band leaders back when there were top big-band leaders. And under his direction, vocalists such as, oh, Frank Sinatra, flourished.

That band-along with those of peers Woody Herman and Benny Goodman-faded out in the mid-40s. But Dorsey soon started up again, with a band that has long outlived him. The group is now led by trombonist Buddy Morrow, who played with Dorsey. Need proof? If you look closely, you can see him in the 1943 movie classic "Girl Crazy."

Morrow and company will be blasting old school at Conner Prairie this weekend. For more information, click here.

This Week's Contest
More than just a standard benefit, the Indianapolis Art Center's Artsparkle features food from, among many others, The Jazz Kitchen, R bistro, Oceanaire Seafood Room, Sullivan's and Ruth's Chris. This year, the music is by Living Proof and the attire suggestion is "Chinese chic."
Tickets are $150 each. You can win a pair entering here . We'll draw one name at random Friday morning and contact you immediately so that you can start planning. For more information on the event, click here.

Just to make things interesting, in the response box, tell us your favorite sparkly thing. What you tell us won't help you win, but next week we'll offer a link to our favorite responses.

Last week's lucky winners, Elizabeth Bruns and Derrick Cash, each won a Rib America prize package that included four VIP tickets to the Labor Day festival. At that time, we asked you for your favorite movie, TV show, or band that has a number in its title (à la Rib America's 38 Special). Some interesting responses are here.

And make sure to visit www.ibj.com/arts for previews, reviews, blogs and video.
