| Business-friendly senator under fire Brent Waltz, a Republican who unseated long-time state Senate Finance Committee Chairman Larry Borst in 2004, is under attack by a primary election challenger who claims Waltz lives outside his district. Waltz lives at his parents' White River Township home in Johnson County rather than at a condominium he leases in Greenwood, according to a challenge filed with the state election commission by Greenwood resident Mike Beeles. The challenge was reported today by the Daily Journal of Franklin.
Kentucky governor proposes 12 casinos After months of anticipation, Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear yesterday unveiled his proposal to legalize casinos in the state. The newly elected Democrat called for 12 casinos in various parts of the state - seven of them at horse tracks and five in communities along the state's borders with Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. Although Kentucky has a long tradition of wagering at horse tracks, state law specifically forbids casinos. | | | | |
| | Hawker Beechcraft to expand at airport Hawker Beechcraft Services plans to expand its maintenance and service location at Indianapolis International Airport, the airport announced this morning. The airport board approved the $14-million project along with a 32-year lease. Forty to 50 workers will be added to the current 73 within five years. The services unit is owned by Hawker Beechcraft Corp. of Wichita, Kan.
Auto parts plant in northern Indiana to close Faurecia North America plans to close its plant in Granger in August as part of a company realignment, displacing about 200 workers, reports the South Bend Tribune. The French company also will close a plant in Ohio. The northern Indiana facility, which makes automobile exhaust system parts, had nearly 500 workers in 2004.
Indy airport operator snags Grissom contract The fixed-base operator at Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville has been awarded a five-year contract to operate Grissom Aeroplex at Peru, 60 miles north of Indianapolis. Montgomery Aviation Inc., which is headquartered in Indianapolis, will land small aircraft, and supply fuel, oil and services at the former Grissom Air Force Base, according to the Kokomo Tribune.
Carson wants to fight ignorance about his faith A convert to Islam stands an election victory away from becoming the second Muslim elected to Congress and a role model for a faith community seeking to make its mark in national politics. Political newcomer Andre Carson is the Democratic nominee in a March 11 special election to succeed his late grandmother, Julia Carson, representing Indiana's 7th District. She died in December of lung cancer, and her grandson is seeking to fill out the rest of her sixth term, which expires at year's end.
Escalade earnings stay sluggish Profit for sports- and office-products maker Escalade Inc. was flat in the quarter ended Dec. 31 on lower sales of sporting goods to mass-market retailers. The Evansville company earned $2.6 million, or 20 cents a share - virtually the same as during the fourth quarter of 2006. The company attributed the weak performance to eroding consumer demand for soccer and hockey game tables.
Blog: Manning vs. Manning II New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is gaining ground on big brother Peyton, the Indianapolis Colts all-pro QB, in at least one category: jersey sales. Eli has burst into the top 20 in NFL jersey sales at No. 7 following his Super Bowl MVP performance. Sports business experts think it's only a matter of time before he surpasses Peyton. | IU chief McRobbie to discuss NCAA allegations A news conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. at which Indiana University President Michael McRobbie will outline his response to NCAA allegations of recruiting violations. University officials plan to conduct their own investigation into the alleged violations by basketball coach Kelvin Sampson. The governing body says Sampson committed five major rules violations since joining the Hoosiers in 2006, including making illegal phone calls to potential recruits and misleading IU and NCAA officials. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.
Toddler critical after car wreck A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after a car accident yesterday on the north side. Officials say an SUV traveling north in the 6400 block of Michigan Road merged into the right lane and clipped another car, causing them both to barrel roll. Officials say the child was buckled in the back seat of the car but wasn't in a booster seat. Two adults in the car and the driver of the SUV were taken to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

| Elrod caught writing letters on House floor State Rep. Jon Elrod, R-Indianapolis, is under fire for signing campaign letters this month while on the Indiana House floor. Elrod is running in a special election for the 7th District Congressional seat left open after Julia Carson's death. Democrats caught Elrod signing "thank you" notes to campaign supporters. The Indiana House bans lawmakers from conducting campaign business while on the floor.
Ex-state attorney due in court A former state attorney finds himself on the other side of the law today. Terry Record, 27, will appear in court today for a pre-trial conference to face charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death. Police say Jimmy Cash, 46, died when Record ran a red light and hit Cash's truck. If convicted, Record could face 20 years in prison.
