EDS to add 100-plus jobs in West Lafayette
EDS plans to hire more than 100 workers at a new location in Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette, according to sources familiar with an announcement scheduled for this afternoon. The Plano, Texas-based computer services firm would not comment. EDS will hire business analysts, systems and software developers and other kinds of employees, the sources said. The exact number of jobs was not available, and the average wage for the jobs is not known.   Full Story


White Lodging to expand headquarters

Hotel giant White Lodging Services said today it will expand its headquarters in the northwestern Indiana town of Merrillville and add 100 jobs within four years. Two buildings on the town's southwest side will be renovated at a cost of $4 million. In the Indianapolis area, White owns 10 hotels under Marriott brands including Fairfield Inn & Suites, Residence Inn, Courtyard and Springhill Suites, and is developing a 1,000-room Marriott convention hotel downtown.  Full Story


Senate panel approves gambling in bars
A Senate committee has endorsed a bill that would allow bars and taverns to offer pull tabs and other low-stakes gambling. The Senate Appropriations Committee voted 8-3 for the bill and sent it to the full Senate. A version of the bill already has passed the House.   Full Story

Janitors union to start negotiations today
The Service Employees International Union, which has organized janitors in Cincinnati, Columbus, Ohio, and now Indianapolis, begins negotiations today on behalf of 1,500 local janitors after years of contentious organizing efforts. The SEIU has worked closely with a local clergymen and women who contend that janitors are not paid a living wage. A dozen clergy planned to pray at Monument Circle today that the negotiations succeed in boosting pay and benefits for the janitors.   Full Story

High court sides with medical device makers
The Supreme Court yesterday sided with business in two cases that give protections to medical-device manufacturers and package-delivery companies. Justices denied business groups a third victory, however, in ruling that retirement plan participants could sue to recover losses. The two favorable outcomes for business relied on federal laws that limit state lawsuits and regulation.   Full Story

Illinois bank opens first Indiana office in Carmel
Mercantile Bancorp Inc., a Quincy, Ill., holding company with locations in four states, plans to open a loan-production office in Carmel as the bank's entry into Indiana. Headed by former First Indiana Bank Vice President Kevin Murphy, the office will focus on business loans of $5 million to $15 million.   Full Story

Work to resume on Getrag transmission plant
Construction on the Getrag transmission plant north of Indianapolis will resume Monday, now that the German transmission maker and its partner on the project, Chrysler LLC, have settled a dispute. The companies wouldn't discuss the issue that caused work on the $530 million project near Tipton to grind to a halt on Dec. 21, according to the Kokomo Tribune. Columbus philanthropist Xenia Miller dies
Xenia Miller, the widow of Columbus industrialist J. Irwin Miller, died Tuesday at the age of 90, according to The Republic of Columbus. J. Irwin Miller was CEO of Cummins Engine Co. Xenia Miller was a Morgantown native who supported causes ranging from downtown redevelopment to bringing to Columbus art by Dale Chihuly, whose tower of blown glass is a permanent sculpture in the Children's Museum of Indianapolis.   Full Story
Emmis to host McCain campaign stop
Republican presidential candidate John McCain is coming to Emmis Communications Corp. headquarters on Monument Circle, McCain's campaign said yesterday. McCain is scheduled to appear Friday at 9 a.m. Is McCain venturing into enemy territory, considering Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan traditionally supports Democrats and has contributed to both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama?   Full Story

Harvard administrator named to lead DePauw
Brian W. Casey, a Harvard University administrator, has been chosen as the next president of DePauw University. DePauw officials were scheduled to make the announcement this morning. Casey replaces Robert Bottoms, who last April said he would step down after serving as president of DePauw since 1986.  Full Story

Indianapolis Colts' tight end Dallas Clark was making less than $650,000 two years ago. With the contract he signed this week, his salary is expected to jump to about $4 million per season. He's a long way behind Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne in salary, but the six-year contract shows the team has put new value in the tight end position. IPS releases surveillance video
Indianapolis Public Schools officials are considering giving the prosecutor's office a surveillance tape that shows a bus driver hitting a student. The prosecutor would then decide whether to file charges. At least six students from School 107 accused the driver, Charles Areh, of hitting them last Friday morning, but the video only shows him striking one student. Areh has been suspended without pay. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.

Brizzi seeks life without parole
The man charged in the beating death of 3-year-old TaJanay Bailey could spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance of parole. Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi yesterday charged Lawrence Green with the girl's November murder at the Phoenix apartments. Green is the boyfriend of TaJanay's mother, Charity Bailey, who also is charged with murder. She could face a lesser charge now that she's agreed to testify against Green.

Apply for passports early
Hoosiers planning to travel out of the country for spring break are urged to start getting ready. The State Department recommends applying for a passport as soon as possible in order to avoid a backlog of applications like last year. Passports are now required for all Americans traveling in and out of the United States by air.

Bloomington doctors agree to performance pay
Chocolates must have been exchanged in Indianapolis' health care community on Valentine's Day. Because the next day saw two pairs of health care companies, both of which were feuding over contract negotiations, kiss and make up. Minnesota-based UnitedHealthcare avoided a break up with Community Health Network. And Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield dodged a divorce with a Bloomington doctors group, Internal Medicine Associates. Community's new contract is a bigger deal locally, involving 18,000 patients. But the deal to pay attention to is Anthem's. The Indianapolis-based health insurer required Internal Medicine Associates to agree to sign up for its pay-for-performance program, which ties increases in doctors' payments to whether they improve in certain quality measures. And Anthem is doing the same in nearly all its contract negotiations, according to local doctor groups.  Full Story   Full Story
