Steak n Shake decides against sale
Offers to buy Steak n Shake were too low, the Indianapolis-based restaurant chain said late yesterday and, as a result, the company will focus on a turnaround plan of improving existing stores. Steak n Shake didn't disclose the number of offers or their values. A sale was among several plans considered by a special committee of independent directors formed in August and aided by the Wall Street firm Merrill Lynch.   Full Story


UnitedHealthcare, Indiana Orthopaedic sign pact

UnitedHealthcare has signed a three-year contract with the Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital, bringing the specialty hospital into UnitedHealthcare's central Indiana network of health care providers. The contract, announced today, took effect on Feb. 1. It gives the orthopedic hospital "in-network" status, which typically means bigger discounts for UnitedHealthcare customers.   Full Story


FDA gives Eli Lilly drug priority review
Partners Eli Lilly and Co. and Tokyo-based Daiichi Sankyo Co. said yesterday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave their anti-clotting drug candidate prasugrel priority review. The designation means the FDA will try to review the drug application within six months. Prasugrel could be a blockbuster if it supplants the current best-selling blood thinner, Plavix, which racked up $6 billion in sales in 2006.   Full Story

Hospital holds back compensation details
Officials of Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin are refusing to disclose some terms of the contract with its new CEO, Larry Heydon. Neither Heydon nor trustees of the 149-bed hospital, which is owned by Johnson County, will discuss the length of the contract and any severance package Heydon might have been offered, among other details, according to the Daily Journal of Franklin.   Full Story

Engineers pledge $2.2 million to Purdue
Purdue University's colleges of engineering and technology each will receive $1.1 million in planned gifts from 1976 engineering graduate Rick Kosdrosky and his wife, Cheryl. The donations, announced today, are unrestricted, which means the colleges will be able to use them as they wish.   Full Story

GE workers bargaining in Bloomington
Workers at a General Electric Co. refrigeration factory in Bloomington that's slated to close next year must wait a few more weeks to learn more about transfer options and certain benefits. Details won't be available until a 60-day decision bargaining period ends March 17. The bargaining period provides a chance to propose ways to save the plant. GE announced last month that it planned to close the factory due to losses of about $45 million last year and an expectation of similar losses this year.   Full Story

Kroger starting 'television network'
Kroger Co., the grocery chain headquartered in Cincinnati, said today it is starting a "television network" that will pipe video into employee break rooms and possibly other locations. The video will tout everything from Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels' InShape Indiana health program to communications with food bank personnel.   Full Story

Indiana University men's basketball players are threatening to boycott the remainder of the season if coach Kelvin Sampson is forced out, CBS Sports reported this morning. IU coach could learn his fate today
Indiana University is expected to hold a news conference today to announce the future of men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson. School officials met yesterday to discuss the findings of an in-house investigation after the NCAA reported five major rules violations by the coach. Many believe Sampson will be suspended and eventually fired. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.

Wintry weather causes tricky commutes
Snow, ice and freezing rain complicated overnight travels in central and southern Indiana last night and this morning. The state police post in Indianapolis reported it has responded to 33 crashes involving property damage, two involving personal injuries and 17 slideoffs since 5 p.m. yesterday.

IPS bus driver may lose job today
Indianapolis Public Schools today may announce whether a bus driver will lose his job. Six students from School 107 accused Charles Areh of slapping, punching and swearing at them last week, but district officials say Areh can only be seen on the surveillance tape raising his hand to one child. Areh is on unpaid suspension while district officials conduct interviews.
