House panel passes amended immigration bill
The House Public Policy Committee voted 7-4 this morning to pass an amended version of a Senate bill that aims to crack down on illegal immigration by targeting their employers. Republicans complained the amendment weakens the bill by giving the state too much enforcement discretion.   Full Story

Escalade shifts archery production to China
Evansville-based sporting goods maker Escalade Inc. is shutting down a children's archery line because a needed investment in upgraded equipment would be too expensive. Instead, Escalade will import the line from China. The company will lay off 25 workers in Evansville as a result, according to the Evansville Courier & Press.   Full Story

New method could harm river cleanup efforts
A shift in how Indiana compiles a federally mandated list of its polluted waterways has removed about 800 stretches of rivers and streams from that list, leaving environmentalists worried that it could hamper watershed restoration efforts. State officials contend the new methodology has produced a more accurate picture of Indiana's "impaired" waterways, and will allow them to focus on cleaning up those most tainted with mercury, PCBs and other contaminants.   Full Story

Rockville Business Center changes hands
Massachusetts-based Equity Industrial Partners Corp. has bought a 630,000-square-foot industrial building at 7900 Rockville Road from Covington Capital Corp. of Columbus, Ohio, for undisclosed terms. The multi-tenant Rockville Business Center is 97-percent leased. Mark Writt of CB Richard Ellis represented both sides in the transaction. Covington acquired the building, which once housed a manufacturing facility for RCA, in September 2005.

Hill files for re-election bid
U.S. Rep. Baron Hill has filed to run for re-election in southern Indiana's 9th District. Hill filed the necessary paperwork with the Indiana Secretary of State's office this morning. If he and Republican Mike Sodrel win their nominations, it would set up a fourth consecutive race between the two.   Full Story

With its season opener six weeks away, Indy Racing League is getting some pre-season exposure from an unlikely source. During the run-up to NASCAR's biggest race yesterday, the Daytona 500, the spotlight shined on two IRL alums vying for the stock car series' 2008 rookie of the year - Sam Hornish Jr. and Dario Franchitti. Super Bowl bid announcement expected tomorrow
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard is expected to make it official tomorrow afternoon that the city will pursue the 2012 Super Bowl. Houston and Phoenix also are angling for the event. Last year, Dallas beat out Indianapolis and Phoenix for the 2011 game. Fox 59 will have more at 10 tonight.

South Bend native wins Daytona
South Bend native Ryan Newman took the checkered flag at yesterday's Daytona 500. He passed fellow Hoosier Tony Stewart on the last lap. It was Newman's first win in more than 80 races. The race kicked off the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Funeral held for smothered toddler
Family and friends gathered today to bury a 2-year-old boy smothered by his mother earlier this month. Police say Sheldon Bartley's mother, Latasha McMorris, passed out on top of him while she was drunk at the EconoLodge at 3525 N. Shadeland Ave. She faces neglect charges.

Colin Powell to visit Indianapolis
Colin Powell is speaking at Butler University tonight. The former U.S. secretary of state's speech is titled "Diplomacy: Persuasion, Trust and Values." The event marks the 20th anniversary of Butler's Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series.
