| Herbert comments publicly on Sampson Adam Herbert agreed with Athletic Director Rick Greenspan's recommendation to hire basketball coach Kelvin Sampson, the former IU president said in an interview published today in The Florida Times-Union of Jacksonville. In his first interview about Sampson and the recent NCAA allegations about improper recruiting calls, Herbert said he, Greenspan, Sampson and two IU trustees met with Sampson for six hours to ask about improper calls he made while he was men's basketball coach at the University of Oklahoma. Herbert said he came away from the meeting thinking Sampson understood the problem and wouldn't repeat the mistakes at IU.
Hoosier Park owner gets approval to buy land The Anderson Parks Board has agreed to let the city's redevelopment commission sell land that Hoosier Park horse track sits on to the track's owner, Indianapolis-based Centaur Inc. Hoosier Park leases the land for nearly $190,000 a year, according to The Herald Bulletin of Anderson.

| | IRL, Champ Car begin transition Now comes the hard part: making the merger between America's two major open-wheel series work. "It'll be long and tedious and expensive and a lot of work to put it all together," car owner Derrick Walker said yesterday after an orientation meeting for the Champ Car teams that are expected to make the switch to the Indy Racing League's IndyCar Series this season. IRL founder Tony George, the owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Champ Car co-owners Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerald Forsythe announced the agreement to end the 12-year split in open-wheel racing last week.
BW3 winging it back downtown A long-vacant storefront along Washington Street downtown is getting a new Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant. The chain plans to occupy about 6,800 square feet in a building near the southeast corner of Merdian and Washington streets, next to Borders book store. The storefront, which has been vacant for several years, was home to Ralph's Deli. The law firm Barnes & Thornburg owns the building. For more, read IBJ's real estate blog, Property Lines.
Poll: Obama, Daniels, Carson have big leads With Indiana's Democratic primary election looming May 6, Barack Obama leads rival Hillary Clinton by a margin of 40 percent to 25 percent, according to a poll released by Gauge Market Research and Howey Politics Indiana. The poll also found that Gov. Mitch Daniels has a commanding lead over Democratic challengers Jim Schellinger and Jill Long Thompson, and that Democrat Andre Carson is ahead of Republican John Elrod for the 7th Congressional District seat held by Carson's late grandmother, Julia Carson.
Ashcroft to testify on Zimmer monitor contract Former Attorney General John Ashcroft has agreed to appear at s federal hearing looking into no-bid contracts he and others received to monitor out-of-court corporate settlements for Warsaw-based prosthetics maker Zimmer Holdings Inc. and other companies. A House Judiciary Committee subcommittee announced the agreement with Ashcroft in Washington, D.C., yesterday, the day before the committee was to consider authorizing its chairman to issue him a subpoena.
Blog: Tennis event nabs title sponsor The Indianapolis Tennis Championships - formerly the RCA Championships - is set to unveil at new title sponsor at 2:30 p.m. today at the Indianapolis Artsgarden downtown. The new title sponsor should boost the event's budget after Thomson's RCA brand exited as title sponsor following the 2006 ATP Tour event. Winter weather hits Indiana Another round of winter storms is leaving many central Indiana roads a slushy mess. Rain changed to snow this morning, but only about 1 inch of accumulation is expected in Indianapolis. Farther north, residents could see 1 to 3 inches. This afternoon, winds could gust to 40 mph. Fox 59 News will have the latest at 10 p.m.
Parts of I-70 closed during overnight incidents Two overnight incidents involving semi-trailer trucks forced officials to shut down parts of Interstate 70 on the east side. Just after 1 a.m., officials responded to a report of a jack-knifed semi in the west-bound lanes near German Church Road, and about two hours later another semi caught on fire only a few hundred yards away from the earlier incident.

| Alleged rape occurs at Pacer player's home The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department is expected to release more information today about an alleged rape at the home of Indiana Pacers guard Marquis Daniels. Investigators say Daniels is not a suspect and the victim says Daniels had nothing to do with it. She says she was raped by someone else in his Carmel home early Sunday morning after hanging out at the Sunset Strip Lounge at Lafayette Road and 16th Street in Indianapolis. A team spokesman would not comment on the situation except to say that Daniels told them what happened.
Hamilton County couple faces neglect charges Jarrod and Khonda Griffin face child neglect charges after a neighbor called the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department on Friday to say the couple put two of their five children in the trunk of their car. The children were ages 4 and 9. The couple was arrested and their children are in custody of child welfare services.
Kite lands in hot retail spot Kite Realty Trust has acquired Rivers Edge shopping Center, gaining a foothold in a hot retail corridor that includes The Fashion Mall and Castleton Square Mall.
Clarian takes piece of Heart Clarian Health has acquired a controlling stake in a cardiology practice based at the Indiana Heart Hospital, which is owned by Clarian competitor Community Health Network.
