| Cabela's stops Greenwood project Rocky fourth-quarter sales have led outdoors retailer Cabela's to put several planned superstores on hold, including one slated for Greenwood. The Nebraska-based company on Wednesday warned that its fourth-quarter earnings would fall short of expectations, thanks to a "challenging retail environment." Cabela's expected same-store sales to plummet 5.9 percent. The Greenwood store is among five placed on hold indefinitely as a result.
Indy, Louisville vying for FFA convention Indianapolis and Louisville are the sole finalists to host the National FFA convention from 2013 to 2019, the Indianapolis-based organization said this morning. One-time frontrunners Minneapolis and Kansas City, Mo., have been eliminated from the competition. "Right now, it's a dead-even process," said spokeswoman Julie Adams. Indianapolis has hosted the gathering since 2006.

| | Houston to bid for 2012 Super Bowl Houston will be bidding on the 2012 Super Bowl, the Texans said Wednesday. Reliant Stadium is the best venue in the league for the big game, the team said. Houston opened its new stadium, with a maximum seating capacity of just more than 72,000, in 2002. It hosted a Super Bowl in 2004. "In terms of providing the NFL with everything they want and more, we believe Reliant Park delivers," Shea Guinn, president of SMG-Reliant Park told the Houston Chronicle. Indianapolis is also considering a bid.
Simon posts strong quarter, stock rises Indianapolis-based shopping mall owner Simon Property Group's fourth-quarter funds from operations increased 12.7 percent, to $507.7 million, the company said today, despite writing off a loss on an Arizona development. Simon's $1.76-per-share results surpassed the $1.66 expected by analysts surveyed by Reuters. Simon shares climbed 2.5 percent this morning to $91.64.
Generators power Cummins profit Diesel engine maker Cummins Inc. said today its fourth-quarter profit climbed 5 percent, supported by strong performance in its power-generation and distribution divisions. The $1 per share was a nickel short of expectations of analysts Thomson Financial expected earnings of $1.05 per share. Revenue jumped 15 percent to $13.05 billion from $11.36 billion in 2006.
Boone visionaries foresee biotech hotbed Economic development leaders in Boone County hope to capitalize on Lebanon's location mid-way between Indianapolis and Purdue University to attract biotechnology firms. Supporters are starting a committee to look into the possibility and a consultant is discussing the notion with universities, according to The Lebanon Reporter.
Housing crisis kills bank merger The proposed $85.6-million acquisition of Cincinnati-based Peoples Community Bancorp Inc. by Integra Bank Corp. of Evansville has been terminated, the banks announced late yesterday. Officials of both banks said the condition of the economy played a role. "It is unfortunate that the ongoing crisis in the housing market has worsened so quickly, created so much uncertainty and fundamentally changed the attitudes of the stock market, industry experts and regulators toward mergers," Integra Chairman and CEO Mike Vea said in a statement. | | | |
| Another RV maker announces layoffs The slowing economy has prompted Newmar Corp. in the northern Indiana town of Nappanee to announce that it will lay off 118 of its 905 workers, according to the South Bend Tribune. Newmar makes motorhomes and fifth-wheel recreational vehicles. Other RV companies announcing recent layoffs in the Elkhart area include Travel Supreme and Monaco Coach, both of which shed workers in Wakarusa. "When things slow down, it's a pretty big domino effect," Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson told the newspaper.

Snow turns into ice storm Predictions of heavy snow accumulations in central Indiana fizzled overnight. Forecasters called for 6 to 8 inches in the Indianapolis area, but less than 2 inches arrived. The ice that also came caused 100 schools in the metro area to delay classes this morning. More snow is expected this afternoon. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.
Jack-knifed semi closes I-65 State police closed Interstate 65 south of Indianapolis early this morning due to a jack-knifed semi in the northbound lanes between Southport and County Line Roads. Shortly after the road reopened, a passing car hit a police cruiser, forcing officials to shut down parts of the interstate again. A person involved in that wreck was treated at a hospital and later released.
Mayor, sheriff agree on police control After weeks of debate, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and Sheriff Frank Anderson reached an agreement yesterday over who should be in control of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Anderson has agreed to hand power over to the mayor. The move still needs to be approved by the City-County Council. If passed, Ballard would assume control at 12:01 a.m. Feb. 29.
Murder suspect sentenced in separate case One of the men accused of killing seven people in Indianapolis' worst mass murder was sentenced yesterday to spend three years in prison on a separate conviction. In November, a jury convicted Desmond Turner of battery by bodily waste for spitting on a jail guard. Turner is also a suspect in the June 2006 killings of an east-side family at 560 Hamilton Ave.
