Gregg stock soars after earnings report

Gregg stock soars after earnings report
Stock in HhGregg Inc. shot up 11 percent this morning after the Indianapolis-based appliance and electronics retailer posted a 38.5-percent increase in profit in its third fiscal quarter. The shares traded near $13.13, up $1.30. CEO Jerry Throgmartin said the retailer benefited from offering value and a "superior customer purchase experience led by our consultative sales force" during the holiday shopping season.   Full Story


Janitors union to deliver 'hearts' to CEO group

A union that's organizing janitors in Indianapolis and other cities planned to deliver 100,000 candy hearts to the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership at noon today to represent the number of people in Indianapolis the union says are without health insurance. Central Indiana Corporate Partnership is a not-for-profit of CEOs from the region's largest corporations and university presidents, and attempts to address work-force, innovation and other issues that promote long-term economic growth.

Tiny town getting huge project
Two developers plan to build a 1.5 million-square-foot industrial and office park along Interstate 69 in Madison County. Indianapolis-based Mann Properties and Illinois-based Opus North are calling the 140-acre development near the small town of Ingalls the I-69 Trade Center. Senate may override veto on film tax break
The Indiana Senate is expected to vote this afternoon on whether to approve tax breaks for films shot in Indiana by overriding a veto from Gov. Mitch Daniels. The legislature passed the bill last year to offer film and video production companies tax breaks of up to 15 percent of costs for projects under $6 million. Daniels vetoed it, calling the incentives too broad based.   Full Story

State senator feels better in battle with cancer
State Sen. David Ford, who has played key roles in economic development legislation, says his chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer appears to be working. "Each day, I feel a little stronger," the 58-year-old Republican told Senate colleagues by telephone this week from his home in Hartford City. "I wish I could be there." Ford said he still faces a lengthy recuperation, but he told Senate President Pro tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, that he would find a way to come to the Statehouse if Republicans needed a deciding vote.   Full Story

Tilson HR to build offices in Greenwood
A Greenwood human resources firm plans to construct a 47,153-square-foot office building along Interstate 65 near a campus opened recently by Indiana Wesleyan University. Tilson HR Inc. has contracted with Alderson Commercial Group to build the $6.5-million, two-story structure on one of the few remaining tracts in South Park Business Center, according to the Daily Journal of Franklin.   Full Story

Weak interest shown in Evansville casino
None of the roughly 25 parties that have shown interest in buying the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City, N.J., have told the trustee overseeing the Tropicana that they want the Casino Aztar sister property in Evansville, according to the Evansville Courier & Press. However, the trustee, Gary Stein, added that potential buyers might be speaking with Wall Street firm Bear Stearns, which is helping him screen the buyers. The Tropicana, Casino Aztar and Horizon casino in Vicksburg, Miss., have been put up for sale by Fort Mitchell, Ky., parent Columbia Sussex to avoid having to seek bankruptcy protection.   Full Story


Rose-Hulman students warned of breach

The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is notifying 1,900 students that their names, Social Security numbers and birth dates were inadvertently posted on a public Web site last fall. The information was removed from the site when it was discovered Feb. 4. School spokesman Bryan Taylor says there's no evidence that unauthorized individuals copied or used the information.

Obama asks EPA to review draft BP permits
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama and two of his Illinois colleagues are urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to mount a "comprehensive" review of proposed air and construction permits for BP's Whiting refinery. Obama and fellow Illinois Democrats Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Rahm Emanuel suggest that Indiana is rushing the permit process for the refinery, which BP plans to expand into a hub for processing heavy Canadian crude oil.   Full Story


Indiana firm to build parts plant in Mississippi

A Shelbyville-based auto parts supplier will build a $40 million plant in Senatobia, Miss., to manufacture stamped and welded steel parts for Toyota vehicles. PK USA, a subsidiary of the Japanese companies Press Kogyo Co. Ltd. and Mitsui & Co. Ltd., supplies metal body parts, chassis parts and plastic injection parts to the U.S. automotive industry. PK USA has operated a plant in Canton, Miss., since 2005. The new plant in northwestern Mississippi is expected to have 150 to 200 employees when production begins in 2010 - when Toyota's Highlander assembly plant in another Mississippi county is to open.  Full Story

Thirty-six hours ago, it looked as though the men's Big Ten tournament at Conseco Fieldhouse in March would be an attendance blockbuster. With Indiana and Purdue at the top of the league's standings and other story lines brewing, local officials have seen interest soar. The Kelvin Sampson controversy, however, may dim the optimism. A story in yesterday's IBJ Daily about house sales contained incorrect figures. The Indianapolis area had 1,962 sales pending in January and 2,235 in January 2007.

Pedestrian struck on northwest side
A 24-year-old woman is in critical condition at Methodist Hospital after being struck by a car in the 6500 block of Georgetown Road this morning. Investigators say she was walking along the road when a grey Honda heading north hit her. The driver was unhurt. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the accident. Fox 59 will have the latest at 10 p.m.

Four hospitalized after police chase
A police chase ended near 38th Street and Kessler Boulevard this morning when a car flipped and caught fire. Police say the four people in the car were trying to escape after one of them was spotted stealing alcohol and steaks from the Meijer store at Pike Plaza. All four people were hurt and taken to area hospitals.

Fire breaks out at east-side motel
For the second time since November, firefighters say an electrical problem in an air-conditioning unit started an overnight fire in an east-side motel. It happened at the Budget Inn at Shadeland Avenue and 21st Street around 2:30 a.m. The fire was contained to a vacant room, but guests staying in the room above it were moved due to smoke damage.

Police searching for Franklin rape suspect
Police in Franklin are searching for a man they say broke into a woman's home and raped her. The alleged incident happened at the Franklin Lakes subdivision just off U.S. 31. Officials say the woman's neighbors are local law enforcement officials and both were home at the time of the incident.

Standard Management a 'startup' again
Standard Management Corp. has hit the reset button on its 5-year-old strategy of acquiring institutional pharmacies. The question is, does the cash-strapped and debt-laden Indianapolis company have enough juice to reboot? Standard no longer owns operating subsidiaries after its largest shareholder foreclosed on its sole remaining pharmacy, Precision Healthcare Inc., on Feb. 6. Standard also handed over a deed to land it owns in Monroe County.
